Man dies in 3-vehicle crash on road into Hurricane; wrong-way driver suspected

ST. GEORGE — A vehicle veered into a lane with oncoming traffic on state Route 9 in Hurricane and caused a three-vehicle collision that killed a man, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The crash blocked the east lanes of the main highway into Hurricane for nearly three hours.

The crash happened shortly after 2 p.m. near 3900 State St., in the eastbound lanes heading from the Interstate 15 exit into Hurricane. The UHP, which is leading crash investigation, said the specific details of the incident are unclear, but troopers said for some reason, a silver vehicle traveling westbound veered through the center median into eastbound traffic.

¨It’s still a super-active investigation,” Trooper Quincy Breur said. “There are multiple officers investigating. For some unknown reason, the vehicle crossed into eastbound traffic lanes.¨

Bruer said the silver car driven by a female driver slammed head-on into a pickup traveling east, then hit a sports utility vehicle.

The male driver of the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. The pickup ended up off the road onto the dirt and brush alongside the road, the UHP said.

The driver of the silver car sustained injuries and was transported to St. George Regional Hospital. Breur did not have information on whether there were injuries to anyone in the third vehicle.

Eastbound SR-9 wasn´t completely opened up until shortly before 6 p.m.

Along with the Utah Highway Patrol, Hurricane Valley Fire and Hurricane Police also responded.

Bruer said it’s unknown if excessive speeds were involved in the 50 mph zone of the road that was between the entry into the Lava Bluff Mobile Home Park and the State Street Chevron service station.

This report is based on information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
