At approximately 9:37 a.m. Utah Highway Patrol responded to a semi rollover on state Route 56 near milepost 45, UHP Sgt. Bambi Baie said.

The Estes Express Lines semi was traveling eastbound when the driver swerved to avoid hitting a deer that had run onto the road, Baie said. The vehicle rolled over on its side and skidded down the roadway. A witness corroborated this series of events to law enforcement, she added.

Baie said the driver suffered minor injuries and was transported via Gold Cross Ambulance to the hospital and later was released. He reportedly was wearing his seatbelt.

The roadway was damaged, said Baie, adding that while the trailer was loaded she was unsure of the property’s condition.

The driver received a citation and law enforcement is conducting an investigation into whether he was driving while impaired, Baie said.

For approximately 30-35 minutes, both lanes were closed while responders worked, said Baie, adding that the road was periodically opened to allow vehicles to pass.

The Utah Department of Transportation, Cedar City Fire Department and Iron County Sheriff also responded to the call.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
