ST. GEORGE — The St. George Art Museum reopened Saturday to the public in emphatic fashion, dazzling art aficionados in one of the largest exhibits in the museum’s history.

The exhibit, “Facing Fire: Art, Wildlife, and the End of Nature in the New West” brings incendiary work from active fire lines and burn zones, giving observers a harrowing glimpse at the omens, elemental force and metaphor of this searing personal experience, according to a press release issued Friday by the city.

“Facing Fire” features photographs, videos and objects found from the California wildfires over the past decade.

“Facing Fire will take up the entirety of our museum,” Natalie Gula, museum manager, said in the press release. “It will give our audience a deep look at the destructive force of wildfires in the West. It can be a deeply personal and immersive experience.”

The opening of this exhibit will be marked with an open-house-style reception from 6-8 p.m. on June 15. Light refreshments will be served. The reception will take the place of the regularly scheduled monthly Art Conversation.

“Fire is a powerful natural force that we harness for the greater good,” said Kevin Cooley, featured artist in the “Facing Fire” exhibit. “It is the only classical element we can create on demand, yet when out of control it has the potential for grave destruction.”

The St. George Art Museum was closed in May to accommodate some renovations, including new laminate flooring funded through grants.
