A silver Toyota and a maroon Kia were traveling east at approximately 40-45 miles-per-hour when the Toyota turned abruptly in front of and collided with the Kia, said Washington City Police Chief Jason Williams.

Police responded to the crash at approximately 2:52 p.m. Extrication was requested initially due to damage to the Toyota’s driver-side door, but responders managed to get it open unassisted and remove the female driver from the vehicle, Williams said.

He said the crash was the second in the area Thursday and that drivers need to be patient as the summer months will cause an influx of traffic.

“Be mindful,” Williams said. “Be aware of all traffic around you. If you’re going to make a U-turn, do so safely and legally so we’re not in a situation where we have a major crash on a major roadway.”

The Toyota’s driver complained of chest pain and difficulty breathing, had a laceration on her arm and other unknown injuries, Williams said.  A passenger in the Kia complained of chest pain and a fractured ankle. The Kia’s driver also complained of pain, but Williams did not specify the cause.

All three individuals were transported to St. George Regional Hospital via Gold Cross Ambulance.

Williams said the driver of the Toyota was wearing her seat belt, which had to be cut while removing her from the vehicle. However, neither occupant of the Kia appeared to be wearing restraints as both were found locked in an unused position.

The Toyota driver showed no signs of impairment but possibly some confusion, Williams said, adding that the accident reconstruction team will conduct an investigation into the collision’s cause. No citations were issued at the scene.

Both eastbound lanes were closed while police conducted their investigation, with traffic being diverted to the center lane, Williams said.

The Washington City Fire Department and Washington City Code Enforcement also responded to the scene.

This report is based on statements from police, emergency personnel or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
