BRIAN HEAD — Dozens of volunteers picked up trash in Brian Head during the town’s annual spring cleanup event Wednesday morning.
Brian Head Town Manager Bret Howser said an estimated 60 to 70 people showed up to help. Many of the volunteers reported gathering enough garbage to fill between two and four large trash bags per person.
“We’ve been doing this every year in the springtime for many years,” Howser said as he picked up trash alongside state Route 143. “People from the community really enjoy coming out and doing this sort of service.”
In addition to town officials, employees and residents, other helpers included a crew of workers from Cedar Breaks National Monument.
After the three-hour cleanup session had ended, the volunteers gathered at the town’s public safety building for a lunch of grilled hamburgers, hot dogs and dutch oven potatoes.
Now that the winter season has ended, tourists and visitors have put away their skis and snowboards and will soon be taking advantage of Brian Head’s many summertime recreation options, including hiking, mountain biking, riding off-highway vehicles and sightseeing.
Among the many events on Brian Head’s summer calendar are a trail running race for women on June 25, the town’s annual Fourth of July celebration, a car show on July 16, a country music festival on Sept. 3 and Rocktoberfest on Sept. 10, plus multiple mountain bike racing events. Howser said the town is planning to host another similar cleanup event toward the end of the summer.
“We’re thinking we’ll do one on the weekend in the fall, and maybe catch some of the people who have a hard time getting up here on a weekday,” he said.
