Motorcyclist going at high speeds collides with trailer near Central, police say

CENTRAL —A motorcyclist attempting to pass three slow-moving trailers on SR-18 near mile marker 28 by Central hit one of the trailers Sunday at a speed reported to be in the neighborhood of 100 mph.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Matt Noyes said that as the motorcyclist began passing the three trucks, a car heading in the opposite direction came around the corner. That’s when the motorcyclist tried to dive back between the two trailers and clipped the back of the trailer in front of him.

While Noyes couldn’t say exactly how fast the motorcyclist was going at the time of the crash, witnesses at the scene said he was going around 100 mph. Noyes said that’s probably what led to the crash, with the rider traveling at such a high rate of speed. The crash is still being investigated and no citations were issued on the scene. The name of the driver was not released.

“Luckily, the motorcycle rider was wearing his helmet, so his injuries aren’t life-threatening,” Noyes said.

Noyes said the motorcycle rider was transported to the hospital by family members. A friend of the motorcyclist on the scene said he was okay but had a “messed up shoulder.”

Both drivers of the trucks surrounding the accident sustained no injuries or major damage to their vehicles or trailers. The motorcycle was hauled away from the scene by a friend of the driver on a flat bed trailer and the other vehicles were able to drive away as soon as the scene cleared.

Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Enterprise Fire Department, Pine Valley Fire Department and Central Fire Department also responded.
