St. George News and Cedar City News are Southern Utah’s No. 1 choice for local news, sports and information. And now, learning about what’s happening around town is easier than ever with the St. George News app for iOS and Android

“This app represents our deep commitment to keep our community informed,” said Ben Lindquist, general manager of Canyon Media. “It allows our residents to stay up-to-date on breaking news, road closures, fires, weather, traffic and other newsworthy situations in which time and information are paramount.”

Get your Southern Utah news updated in real time with blazing speed and push notifications for breaking stories. The St. George News app is available in the App Store and the Google Play Store for smartphones and tablets. It’s free to download and use.

Canyon Media currently employs the third-largest newsroom in Utah and has built a highly respected reputation for providing fast and reliable news. During newsworthy events, thousands of people go to the St. George News and Cedar City homepages for updates.

Recognizing that the majority of readers use their smartphones to keep up with current events, the company invested tens of thousands of dollars and hundreds of man-hours into creating an app. Lindquist said he’s particularly proud of the speed and functionality, adding that it’s one of the fastest news apps on the market. Loading stories is much quicker compared to the St. George News and Cedar City News websites.

The app has been downloaded over 5,000 times since launching in September. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, Lindquist said, adding that users are enjoying a seamless browsing experience.

“It’s the best way to consume our news,” he added. “We put a lot into this with the hopes that people will be able to get all that information quickly and right in their pocket.”

Breaking news notifications are reserved for urgent events like highway closures and law enforcement incidents. If something’s happening that Southern Utahns should know about, they’ll receive a ping.

Shane Brinkerhoff, president of news operations for St. George News and Cedar City News, said an app has been in the planning stages for years, largely due to reader demand. Canyon Media contracted with a local software engineering company to design and develop it.

“We didn’t want to put an app out until we could do it right,” he added. “We’re constantly looking for new ways to connect with our user base, and I feel like the app is the best way to do that. It’s really a tribute to the community and the way they’ve supported us.”
