CEDAR CITY — As the high school spring sports seasons wind down to a close, a number of Southern Utah schools in the 3A, 2A and 1A classifications have made strong showings in the playoffs and other state-level competitions.

Following are brief recaps of selected spring sports, highlighting the performances of Southern Utah teams:

2A baseball

After finishing third in the Region 19 regular season standings, the No. 6 seeded Parowan Rams made it all the way to the 2A championship game, facing the No. 1-seeded South Sevier Rams in the finals at Kearns High School on May 14.

Although Parowan held a 10-8 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, South Sevier scored six runs in that frame to regain the lead, after which the top-seeded Rams held on for a 14-12 victory.

Parowan had defeated No. 5 seed Kanab 11-8 earlier that morning in the one-loss bracket to earn a spot in the finals. Parowan finished its season with an overall record of 16-11.

2A softball

The 2A softball tournament’s top two seeds met in the finals at Spanish Fork on May 14, with the No. 1 Duchesne Eagles defeating the No. 2 Enterprise Wolves in back-to-back contests.

The Eagles won the first game 2-1, then followed that with a 5-4 victory in the “if necessary” deciding game to win its first state softball title in school history.

Meanwhile, Enterprise finished its season with an overall record of 24-9, including 12-0 in region play.

Other Southern Utah schools making it as far as the 2A state quarterfinals were Parowan and Beaver, while Millard was the last team eliminated from the one-loss bracket.

3A baseball

After going 9-3 and finishing second in Region 12, the Canyon View Falcons earned the No. 2 seed in the 3A state playoffs.

In the opening round on May 7 at Canyon View, the Falcons defeated Grand County 8-3, then lost a wild 22-21 contest later that same afternoon to Juan Diego. The Falcons scored 16 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but lost their lead when they gave up 10 runs in the top of the seventh.

Junior Hutson Slack led the Falcons offensively, going 3-for-5 at the plate with two homers and eight RBIs. Juan Diego, which was seeded seventh in the bracket, went on to win the 3A state championship.

Canyon View then went on to win two games in the one-loss bracket on Thursday, defeating Union 4-3 and Summit Academy 6-1. However, the Falcons fell to Juab the following day at Utah Valley University by a score of 6-4. The Wasps belted a walk-off home run to end the game.

Canyon View finished its season with an overall record of 18-11.

Then, on Thursday, the Falcons lost to eventual state champion Manti by a score of 9-2 at the Spanish Fork Complex.

That loss dropped the Falcons into the one-loss bracket, where they proceeded to win their next three games, all by similar scores: 13-3 over Juab and 13-2 over North Sanpete on Thursday, and 13-3 over Carbon on Friday.

Later that afternoon, however, the Falcons’ tournament run came to an end at the hands of Grand County Red Devils, who eked out a narrow 2-1 victory.

Grand then lost to the South Summit Wildcats, who went on to face Manti in the finals, losing 13-0.

Canyon View finished its season with an overall record of 16-14, including 5-3 in Region 12, where they finished third.

2A boys soccer

Seventh-seeded Millard was the only Southern Utah school to make it to the 2A boys soccer semifinals, but the Eagles lost to St. Joseph by a score of 8-0 at Juan Diego High on Tuesday. St. Joseph went on to lose 2-0 to Rowland Hall in the finals at Rio Tinto Stadium the following day.
