CEDAR CITY β Braxton Jones, an All-American offensive tackle for the Southern Utah University football team, became the fourth player in school history to hear his name called in the NFL draft.
Jones, a redshirt junior who is listed at 6-foot-7 and 310 pounds, was selected by the Chicago Bears in the fifth round of the draft with the 168th overall pick in Las Vegas on Saturday, making him the third-highest selection in SUU history.
Jones, a three-year starter for the Thunderbirds, was a two-time All-Big Sky First-Team selection and earned Associated Press FCS All-American honors this past fall.
Jones, who played high school football for the Murray Spartans in Murray, Utah, joins an elite club of Southern Utah draft selections, which includes Miles Killebrew (2016), Leshaun Sims (2016), and Brad Sorensen (2013).
Jones was one of three players from Utah colleges taken in the 2022 draft, joining University of Utah’s Devin Lloyd, selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round, and Brigham Young University’s Tyler Allgeier, chosen by the Atlanta Falcons in the fifth round.
