At 7:15 a.m. a structure fire was reported at a single-family residence on West 200 North. Fire crews arrived to find smoke billowing out from one of the windows. Fire crews with Washington City Fire were soon joined by St. George Fire Department’s squad truck and crew that was dispatched to assist.

Washington City Fire Chief Matt Evans told St. George News when fire crews entered the home they found active flames in the bedroom where the fire appears to have started. The flames were extinguished before they had a chance to spread, and crews then began the task of overhauling the residence in search of burning embers, including pulling material from the scorched area to both extinguish anything still smoldering and prevent a reignition that could cause a secondary fire, a task that could take a few hours.

Evans said the bedroom where the fire appears to have started was occupied at the time by homeowners who were sleeping when the fire broke out. All occupants safely evacuated the home prior to the Fire Department’s arrival, he added.

He also said that crews were still working inside the home. The investigation will begin once they are finished. The bedroom sustained considerable damage, but the rest of the home was spared from any fire damage, though it did sustain some smoke and water damage.

With the ongoing investigation, Evans said, the cause of the blaze has yet to be determined.

The Washington City Fire Department, St. George Fire Department, Washington City Police Department and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the scene.
