Desert Pain is a team of highly skilled providers seeking to improve patient quality of life through innovative pain management solutions. The clinic treats both acute and chronic pain conditions at eight locations across Southern Utah and Nevada, offering an exceptional and highly individualized patient experience.

“We’ve always kept that patient focus, and I think that’s what has allowed us to expand,” said Brian Jorgensen, a physician assistant-certified who joined Desert Pain in 2010. “Everybody’s different. No patient is a ‘textbook case,’ and we recognize that.”

Jorgensen said that patients starting a new chapter in their pain management journey often have many questions. As such, he strives to answer some of the most common.

Do you offer a patient portal?

Desert Pain’s online patient portal allows patients to view and pay bills and save time by filling out pre-appointment paperwork. It’s also a way for patients to communicate directly with their provider’s medical assistant and share questions, concerns or comments. The correspondence is then passed along to their provider.

“We listen,” Jorgensen said. “We’re going to take the time to hear what the patient has to say.”

How can I access my records?

Desert Pain provides quick, easy access to medical records within the patient portal. Patients can also view the results of tests and imaging scans, and see progress notes from their provider.

Patients may register with their email address or by connecting their Facebook or Google account. The portal is available 24/7.

How many providers do you have?

A team of four physicians and nine advanced practitioners serve patients throughout the greater St. George, Cedar City and Mesquite areas. The physicians at Desert Pain are all board-certified in interventional pain management and offer treatments ranging from epidural injections to implanted spinal cord stimulators, while the advanced practitioners provide acute and long-term pain management for conditions such as migraines, neuropathy and shingles.

With a diversity of backgrounds and interests, providers draw upon one another’s expertise to improve patient outcomes. As their patient base grows along with Southern Utah’s population, Desert Pain will welcome another doctor later this year. Jorgensen said there may be even more new faces in the near future.

Do you have social workers?

Desert Pain employs two licensed clinical social workers, Marilla Garcia and Shari Gillins, to help patients navigate the challenges of living with chronic pain. Jorgensen said it’s becoming more common for pain clinics to have social workers on staff to provide coping strategies, mindfulness techniques and resources for treating the emotional imbalances that often accompany pain disorders.

“It’s important to look at mental health and overall health – not just the physical aspect of the patient, but all aspects that can be affected by chronic pain,” he added. “Social workers provide a broader scope of tools that patients can utilize to combat their pain without having to rely solely on medications.”

As Southern Utah’s premier interventional pain management team, Desert Pain practices evidence-based, forward-thinking medicine that integrates the newest available treatments. Their providers address all types of pain conditions, including back pain, neck pain, sciatica, neuropathy, migraines and sports injuries, and are dedicated to helping patients regain mobility and enjoy a greater quality of life.

“We’re going to battle for our patients,” Jorgensen said. “We don’t always win every day, but we’re going to do the best we can for every patient that walks through our door.”
