Region 10 soccer: Mustangs win at home, Reds, Panthers get road wins as region race tightens

WASHINGTON — The boys soccer team from Crimson Cliffs High School was on a mission to score goals Friday night at home.

Mission accomplished, in the form of a 3-0 shutout victory over Hurricane.

The Mustangs possessed the ball for most of the match and peppered Hurricane goalkeeper Kandon Heaton with 25 shots, 12 of which were on goal.

Crimson Cliffs found the back of the net on a corner kick shortly into the first half.

Ryan Woolley delivered a perfect cross right to the foot of Elijah Smith, who finished with a shot into the top of the cage for a 1-0 Mustangs lead.

“We knew Hurricane would give it their all – they’re highly aggressive,” Crimson Cliffs coach Isaac Klingonsmith told St. George News after the win. “They play with a lot of heart, so we came in amped up ready to give it our all.”

The Mustangs kept up the pressure on the offensive end, earning six corner kicks in the game and also generating shots off of long runs.

Scotty McKittrick scored the second goal of the game when he collected a loose ball near the top of the box and beat Heaton in the lower corner of the frame.

“It was just a good half for us,” Klingonsmith said. “We created some good chances, then we kind of stalled out a little bit when we had the big lead in the second half.”

Woolley connected with Smith for the final goal of the contest, which came near the end of the first half. Woolley charged through midfield then passed to Smith, who struck from just outside the box for the third tally.

With the win, Crimson Cliffs moved to 3-1 in Region 10 play (5-1 overall) and stayed in second place behind Dixie (3-0, 5-0).

“The region is the most competitive it has ever been, in terms of teams that can win games against each other in any matchup,” Klingonsmith said. “Obviously our objective is to win every game. The goal is to outplay every team that we play.”

Hurricane slipped to 1-3 in region play and 3-4 overall after the setback.

Cedar 1, Desert Hills 0

The Reds came away with an impressive road victory against the Thunder.

Mason Palmer netted the only goal in the contest, converting an assist from Levi Humphrey to score the game-winner for Cedar.

Dagan Murray was a stonewall in front of the Cedar goal. The senior goalkeeper did not allow a shot to get behind him against the Thunder’s potent attack.
