ST. GEORGE — Students who attend Dixie State, Southern Utah or other degree-granting colleges and universities across the state can expect to see an increase in tuition or fees beginning this fall semester.

The Utah Board of Higher Education considered tuition and general student fee adjustments requested by Utah’s colleges and universities on the first day of their two-day meeting, ultimately approving tuition increases ranging from 0.65% to 4.80%, depending on the institution, according to a press release issued Thursday.

With a $44 change, Southern Utah University will see the lowest increase, while Dixie State University will see a $213 change. Dixie State officially will change its name to Utah Tech in July.

On Thursday, each public higher education institution president presented the institution’s proposed tuition adjustment to the board, which invited student and public feedback.

Tuition increases primarily were adjusted to meet the legislative requirement to fund compensation increases with tuition and for mandatory costs relating to tenure and promotion of faculty.

“Affordability is a top priority of the Board, and after careful consideration, modest tuition and student fee increases for Utah’s public colleges and universities were approved,” Harris H. Simmons, chair of the Utah Board of Higher Education, said in the press release.

Simmons said the board and institution presidents continue to work to keep college as affordable as possible, without sacrificing quality.

“We appreciate the work and collaboration of our institutions, their trustees, and their student leaders in this process,” Simmons said. “And we are grateful to the state legislature for their continued investment in public higher education, which has allowed us to keep the cost of attending college in Utah among the lowest in the nation.”

The tuition rates at Utah’s technical colleges and institutions remain the same, without an increase, for the 2022-23 academic year.

The following tuition and fee adjustments will go into effect for the 2022-23 academic year:

Undergraduate Resident Tuition and Fees Adjustment
Two semesters at 15 credit hours each
Institution Dollar Change Percent Change
University of Utah $471 4.80%
Utah State University $250 3.10%
Utah State University – Eastern, Moab, Blanding $138 3.10%
Weber State University $163 2.62%
Southern Utah University $44 0.65%
Snow College $180 4.50%
Dixie State University $213 3.63%
Utah Valley University $260 4.33%

Each year following the legislative session, the Utah Board of Higher Education determines the amount of additional tuition necessary to meet the operating budget needs and help fulfill the missions of Utah’s public colleges and universities.

Ed. Note: This article has been updated to clarify that Southern Utah University only had an increase in fees.
