Candidates aplenty in Washington County, state and federal office races

ST. GEORGE — Candidates for public office, from the county to the federal level, are plentiful moving into the 2022 midterm election season after filings that took place last week.

In Washington County, all three County Commission seats are up for grabs and have the incumbents facing at least one challenger for each. Other county positions, like the clerk/auditor and sheriff, are unopposed.

Four seats on the Washington County School Board are also up this year with three of them facing challengers. Unlike other county races, where a candidate may file as a Democrat, Republican or other party, school board races are nonpartisan.

On the state-level, the field is full of contenders for particular state House and Senate races representing Washington County. Of these, multiple candidates have filed to run for House 72, 73, and 74.

Rep. Walt Brooks of St. George is running unopposed for reelection in House 75.

Recent redistricting of the legislative districts has also changed some of the district boundaries in Washington County.

District 62 no longer exists in the county and has been replaced with District 73, for which Rep. Travis Seegmiller faces four other challengers in his reelection bid.

District 71 is also no longer in Washington County, having been moved northward into Iron County. It has been replaced with District 72, which is currently represented by Rep. Brad Last. Last did not file to run for reelection and leaves the seat open to three contenders.

Like Last, Rep. Lowry Snow, who currently represents House 74, will not be running for another term. He announced in December he would be leaving the Legislature at the end of his current term. Five people have filed to run for House 74.

Senate District 28, which covers a part of Washington County, is also packed with candidates seeking to unseat Sen. Evan Vickers who has also filed for reelection. Four others have also filed to run for Senate 28.

On the federal level, Rep. Chris Stewart is facing five contenders for Utah’s 2nd Congressional District. Among them is a fellow Republican, a Democrat, members of third parties and an unaffiliated candidate.

Sen. Mike Lee is facing six challengers from within the Republican Party for his seat. This includes former legislator Becky Edwards and Ally Isom, an aide of former Gov. Gary Herbert and a former spokeswoman for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Other challengers include Democrat Kael Weston, who ran against Stewart in 2020, and former presidential candidate Evan McMullin.

In all, Lee faces 11 challengers for his Senate seat.

What follows is a breakdown of who is running for each position and whether or not they are gathering signatures to secure a place on the November ballot in addition to going through the caucus-convention process.
