CEDAR CITY — Several elected offices in Iron County will have incumbents running unopposed in the Nov. 8 general election.

Nevertheless, several other races are being contested, by newcomers and familiar faces alike.

Right after the five-day filing period officially ended at 5 p.m. Friday, Iron County Clerk Jon Whittaker told Cedar City News a handful of last-minute applications had come in right before the deadline.

The Iron County School District Board of Education’s two newly created seats (Districts 6 and 7) have just one candidate filed for each, namely Lauren Lewis and Megen Ralphs, respectively, so they will be running unopposed in the non-partisan races.

Meanwhile, in school board District 4, incumbent Dale Brinkerhoff faces two challengers in Mary Foremaster and Stephanie Hill. Additionally, in District 5, Billy Davis, Steve Merrill and Tiffiney Christensen will be vying for the seat currently occupied by school board president Michelle Lambert, who did not file for re-election.

Candidates in the various partisan races will be seeking to formally receive their respective party nominations at the upcoming county conventions in early April, followed by the state conventions later that month.

Both the Republican and Democratic state conventions will be held in Salt Lake City on April 23, while the state Libertarian Party convention is April 8-9 in Layton. Additionally, the United Utah Party will be holding caucus events throughout the state on Tuesday.

Some candidates have also filed their intention to gather signatures as a way of securing a spot on the ballot, in case they do not receive their party’s nomination.

The statewide primary election is June 28, with mail-in ballots going out about three weeks prior.
