ST. GEORGE — A gun and hunting gear store on Tabernacle Street in St. George was burglarized, according to police. just before dawn Friday morning, leaving items missing and the store damaged enough that it had to remain closed for the day.
Dixie Gun & Fish, at 1088 E. Tabernacle St., was broken into around 5 a.m., according to St. George Police. The store, which along with high-end weapons, handguns and military-style rifles sells safes and items for hunting, remained closed for the day, according to the store’s Facebook page.
Officer Tiffany Mitchell said detectives were “still actively investigating” as of early Friday afternoon.
“They are working on getting an inventory of items stolen, and there was property damage during the burglary,” Mitchell said.
The only visible damage on the outside of the store was a boarded-up glass front door. None of the other nearby businesses, including a lawyer’s office directly next door to the store, appeared to have been broken into or damaged.
Friday wasn’t the first time Dixie Gun & Fish started its day with a break-in.
In December 2013, the store, then at another suite in the same building, was burglarized around 1 a.m. with about $12,000 worth of handguns stolen. The suspect in that crime later voluntarily admitted to the crime, pled guilty and has since passed away.
