6th annual ‘Dodgeball Throwdown’ raises more than $10,000 for Iron County Care and Share

CEDAR CITY — The sixth annual Charity Dodgeball Throwdown took place Saturday at Canyon View High School, raising more than $10,000 on behalf of Iron County Care and Share.

A total of 16 teams competed for bragging rights, with the Blundercats winning first place overall and Monuments placing second. The Blundercats, based in Enoch and led by captain Sonn Berrett, were sponsored by I Know a Guy Flooring.

Meanwhile, the Monuments, also a local team, were captained by Kristi Gilbert and sponsored by the Monuments Treatment Center in Parowan.

Another coveted award went to the “Ultimate Losers.” This year’s winner of that distinction was Canyon Creek Services, who jokingly named their team “Defeat Derek Morton,” referring to event organizer Derek Morton of Netgain Property Management, who once again headed up the team known as “Evictus.”

“It was a fantastic event,” Morton told Cedar City News afterward. “We’re just grateful for all their support, for all the sponsors and for everyone that participated. We were able to raise a lot of money that’ll go to a good cause and create fantastic memories. We hope that everyone is willing to come back next year.”

Morton said the event has raised more than $75,000 since its inaugural year in 2017.

Saturday’s action commenced almost immediately after Pastor Robyn Eddy of the Community Presbyterian Church in Cedar City threw out the ceremonial first ball, the first of many to be thrown throughout the day.

In addition to plenty of dodging, ducking, dipping, diving and dodging on the courts, the event also featured a silent auction, a live performance by local band Apollo’s Army and appearances by the mascots of Dixie State University and the University of Utah.

“Our sixth annual Dodgeball Throwdown was an incredible success again, with the imagination of D-Mo, the hard work of our team and the support of our community,” said Iron County Care and Share director Peggy Green as she thanked the community for their ongoing support of the event.
