St. George Police Lt. David Williams told St. George News the collision was caused by what has became a common traffic mistake: failure to yield right of way at a left-hand turn.

“Our administration, our chief and deputy chief and four captains are working with the patrol unit on this very situation,” Williams said. “It causes huge problems. It causes a lot of accidents around St. George.”

In this case, a silver Toyota sedan was in the left turn lane on Riverside Drive, waiting to go onto 2450 East, Williams said.

Coming westbound on Riverside was a heavy pickup truck and trailer. Williams said that vehicle collided with the silver sedan when it tried to make the turn.

According to witnesses and police, the sedan suffered heavy rear-end damage.

Meanwhile, witnesses and police said that the pickup truck  jack-knifed after the collision, causing the trailer to swing around and strike a Hyundai that had been waiting in the left-hand turning lane behind the sedan.

The female driver of the Hyundai, who was with her mother heading to get something for dinner, reported minor injuries to St. George News.

The vehicle, which was brand new, suffered heavy front-end damage.

“Accidents are horrible every time they happen, but it’s even worse when it’s a new car,” Williams said, adding that the driver of the sedan was cited for failure to yield right of way at a left-hand turn.
