Sunny Side with Cindy: Tan’s Treats fights to eradicate food insecurity one child at a time

SOUTHERN UTAH — Food insecurity is a nationwide crisis. Millions of children face hunger on a daily basis, including students in the Washington County School District. That’s where Tan’s Treats comes in.

Sunny 101.5 morning show host Cindy Olson uses her new show “Sunny Side with Cindy” to celebrate the people that make our community a better place to live. In this episode, presented by The Shoppes at Zion, she met with Tan’s Treats founders Zach Holt and Nicole Goulding, who believe that one hungry child is one too many.

Tan’s Treats is a Southern Utah-based nonprofit created with the specific goal of providing food to the kids in the community that need it most. They work hand-in-hand with the Washington County School District to identify at-risk students, mainly focusing on meals for weekends, holidays and other periods of time when kids don’t have access to school breakfast and lunch programs.

Students have a 15-day school break for Christmas this year, and Tan’s Treats is prepared to support families by distributing large meal sacks. People interested in volunteering can sign up for upcoming bag-packing dates. Come alone or with a group; every pair of hands helps.

“It takes a massive volunteer and donor effort,” Holt said.

Holt and Goulding started Tan’s Treats in 2016. They named the organization after their brother, Tanner, who in elementary school started giving his lunch every day to a boy in his class that didn’t have enough to eat at home.

Tanner passed away in 2012, and the Holt family decided to honor his memory by performing an act of service in the community each Christmas. Helping others was the theme of Tanner’s life, Goulding said.

“It seemed like the perfect fit for a little boy that had given his lunch away all those years ago.”

Tan’s Treats is supported by donations from both businesses and everyday people in the community. If you’d like to get involved by donating, volunteering or both, email [email protected] or visit tanstreats.com.
