The incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. at the intersection of 600 South and Main Street. It involved a black Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a silver Mitsubishi Outlander SUV.

Cedar City Police Sgt. Tim Bonzo said the motorcycle had been traveling south on Main Street while the SUV had been heading north on Main.

While the exact circumstances of the crash are still under investigation, Bonzo said preliminary indications are that the SUV driver turned left in front of the bike.

“Until we can talk to all the witnesses and get some statements from them, we won’t know for sure,” Bonzo said. “We’re still trying to determine who might have had a green light or a red light. We haven’t pointed the blame in any direction.”

The motorcycle rider was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash, Bonzo said. Emergency responders provided medical care at the scene before the man was taken by ambulance to Cedar City Hospital with critical injuries.

A short time later, Bonzo confirmed that the man died at the hospital. His name has not yet been released, pending notification of family.

Meanwhile, the adult female driver of the SUV was also transported to the hospital, although her injuries were not believed to be serious.

The SUV ended up rolling some distance down the street to the west after the crash, its front end heavily damaged. Tow trucks were called in to remove both vehicles from the scene.

In addition to Cedar City Police officers and Cedar City Fire Department personnel, Utah Highway Patrol troopers also responded to the incident, which impacted traffic in and around the congested intersection for more than an hour. A UHP trooper was observed mapping and photographing the scene using an aerial drone

“We’re still early in the investigation,” Bonzo told Cedar City News at the scene.

This is a developing story.
