High school swimmers kick off season at Greg Fernley Invitational in St. George

ST. GEORGE — The high school swim season got off the blocks last weekend, with 19 schools from around the state participating in the Greg Fernley Invitational meet on Friday and Saturday at the Sand Hollow Aquatic Center near Snow Canyon High School.

The Cedar High girls and the Desert Hills boys were the top scoring teams from Region 10, finishing a respective fifth and second overall. American Fork was the winner in both the girls and boys meets.

The most popular race was the 50-yard freestyle, which saw more than 200 girls and 180 boys competing.

Among the highlight performances by Southern Utah swimmers, Aspen Simper of Cedar High won the 100 free in a time of 56.63 seconds. She also placed second out of 75 competitors in the 200 free with a time of 2:03.63.

Kensley Messinger of Crimson Cliffs tied for second in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.34. She also finished third in the 50 free.

Afton Page of Snow Canyon placed third in the 100 butterfly. Addison Taylor of Canyon View took second in the 500 free. Kiley Reynolds of Canyon View won the 100 breast in a time of 1:09.31.

On the boys’ side, Canyon View’s Max Cannon won the 200 free in 1:46.48. He also won the 500 free in a time of 4:45.58. The Falcons have moved to the 3A classification this year.

Additionally, Dixie High sophomore Andrew Carlisle placed second in the 100 fly with a time of 55.42 seconds. Cedar senior Tobler Dotson took third in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.40. Sophomore Josh Walker of Crimson Cliffs took third in the 100 back in 54.85.

The Cedar High boys also finished first in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:34.76.

Next up for many of the Southern Utah swimmers will be an invitational meet hosted by Cedar High this Friday and Saturday at the Cedar City Aquatics Center.
