ST. GEORGE — New charging stations are now available for visitors and residents who own electric vehicles in the St. George area.

Dixie Power cut the ribbon on two EV fast chargers at their offices in Bloomington on Wednesday. The chargers are available for public use and are located at 145 W. Brigham Rd, St. George.

Joined by Hunt Electric and the St. George Area of Commerce, Dixie Power personnel used the occasion to celebrate the installation of their first EV chargers.

With the growing interest in EV vehicles, Dixie Power set about to learn more about EV fast chargers and what role they will play with utilities across the state, according to a press release issued by the company.

“We did this project primarily to learn and to gain first-hand experience on how to move forward with these new technologies,” Dixie Power CEO LaDel Laub said during the ribbon-cutting. “We’ve learned a lot over the last two months. We’ve learned the benefits as well as the challenges.”

“The governor and the Utah Department of Transportation have really been pushing to get a fast-charging station every 50 miles within the state,” Laub said. “We in the cooperative world play an important role in achieving this goal as we serve a lot of the rural areas in the state.”

Roland Howard with Hunt Electric explained some of the technical aspects of the chargers.

Depending on the car, these chargers can completely charge a car in as little as 30 minutes, Howard said, adding that the longest it would take would be close to 90 minutes for a full charge.

Laub commended the Dixie Power Board of Directors and employees for their willingness to look to the future and embrace new technologies.

“Over 13 years ago, Dixie Power installed a community solar field, and almost two years ago, they purchased two EV cars to lend out to their members for a one-week free trial,” the press release states. “Over those two years, Dixie Power has seen high demand from their membership interested in and wanting to learn more about how an electric vehicle would work for their situation.”
