WASHINGTON CITY — A pair of crashes on northbound I-15 left at least one woman with injuries resulting in her transport to St. George Regional Hospital. Police were called to the scene of a crash near mile marker 11 at around 6:05 p.m. on Monday evening.
Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Jeff Adams said a 31-year-old woman driving a silver Mercury Marquis slowed to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of her when a Range Rover driven by a 23-year-old female collided with the back of the Mercury.
“The driver of the Mercury Marquis was taken to the hospital for evaluation, and the extent of her injuries are unknown at this time,” Adams said. “The driver of the Range Rover denied having injuries at the scene.”
The collision pushed the Mercury onto the left shoulder of I-15 while the Range Rover was disabled in the right lane of the interstate. While first responders worked to help the people involved, traffic was funneled into one lane of the interstate for about 20 minutes until the SUV was removed.
The driver of the Ranger Rover was issued a citation for following too close and being at fault in this crash, Adams said.
“Rear-end crashes are one of our most common crashes, especially on the interstate,” he said. “Drivers need enough distance between themselves and the vehicle in front of them to stop safely in the event that something happens – whether another vehicle slows or another unforeseen event occurs.”
A second incident involving a passenger vehicle and a semitractor-trailer occurred just minutes later about a mile south of the first crash. That incident was delegated to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office as UHP worked to clear the first scene.
At the time of reporting, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office was not available for comment.
Efforts to clear both crashes led to congestion along I-15 for about 3 miles. The first incident involving the Mercury and Range Rover was cleared around 7:30 p.m., Adams said.
Washington City Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance both responded to the scene at mile marker 11, but the injured woman opted for private transport instead of using the ambulance.
