Region 10 girls tennis: Hurricane, Desert Hills off to 2-0 starts

CEDAR CITY — The Region 10 girls tennis season got underway Aug. 26, with both Desert Hills and Crimson Cliffs sweeping their respective opponents.

In the regular season opener, Desert Hills won all five of its matches at Pine View, with the closest one being Malika Maxwell’s win over Ava Blake in first singles, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. Meanwhile, Crimson Cliffs, the defending state 4A champions, swept visiting Snow Canyon 5-0.

Also on Aug. 26, Hurricane traveled to Cedar City to face the Cedar Reds, with the Tigers winning 4-1. Cedar’s lone victory came in third singles, where Taya Torres outlasted Sadie Hatch in a battle that lasted 3 1/2 hours. After dropping the first set 4-6, Torres came back to win the second, 6-3. The third set went to a tiebreaker, with Torres prevailing 7-4.

Then, on Tuesday, Desert Hills won at Dixie, 4-1. In No. 1 singles, Kylie Kezos earned Dixie’s lone victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Maxwell. Also on Tuesday, Snow Canyon won at Cedar, 4-1, with the Warriors winning all but the second doubles match, a close contest that featured tiebreakers in both the second and third sets. 

Hurricane also edged Pine View on Tuesday, 3-2. Pine View’s Blake defeated Hurricane’s Megan Lee in first singles, 6-0, 6-1. Both doubles matches went three sets, with Hurricane winning No. 1 doubles and Pine View taking the No. 2 category.

The girls tennis season is a short one, with each of the seven Region 10 teams scheduled to play each other just once. The region tournament is scheduled for Sept. 24-25 at Tonaquint Tennis Park in St. George, while the state 4A tournament will be at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City on Oct. 1-2.

Thursday’s scheduled matches (Sept. 2)

  • Cedar at Crimson Cliffs, 4 p.m.
  • Desert Hills at Snow Canyon, 4 p.m.
  • Dixie at Hurricane, 4 p.m.
  • Pine View (bye).
