Snow Canyon rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat Pine View at home in a 5-set thriller, Hurricane defeated Dixie and Desert Hills won at home against Cedar as local teams began the race for the Region 10 championship.

Snow Canyon 3, Pine View 2

The Warriors rallied to claim a 15-11 victory in the fifth set to take the win in an evenly matched, competitive contest in the Snow Canyon gym.

After the match, Snow Canyon coach Markay Thorkleson spoke with St. George News and was quick to identify the key to the win.

“Heart, and a lot of guts,” Thorkleson said. “They did a good job. Serving was our theme to win the match tonight, tough serves.”

Junior Aggeliki Georgopoulou led the Warriors from the service line with seven aces. Sophomore Avery Thorkleson knocked in four aces and junior outside hitter Sophie Jaster had three aces in the win.

Snow Canyon started strong and took the opening set 25-13. But the visitors from Pine View showed grit and strong play at the net to win the next two sets 25-23, 25-16.

The Warriors seized back the momentum in the fourth set. Georgopoulou had a strong service run, Camryn Sutterfield and Savannah Cheever knocked in kills and Avery Thorkleson served an ace to win the set 25-16.

The deciding fifth set went back and forth as Snow Canyon’s lead never got larger than three until Avery Thorkleson’s ace provided the match winner.

“Our middles came up huge with a couple of big blocks there in the end,” coach Thorkleson said. “And the outsides started to turn it on and put the ball away when we needed it.”

Hurricane 3, Dixie 1

The Tigers won the first two sets in their home matchup against the Flyers, 25-17 and 25-12.

Dixie came back to claim the third set 25-18 but then Hurricane shut the door on the visitors and took the match in the fourth set, 25-20.
