IRON COUNTY — After an catastrophic power outage lasting more than 48 hours in certain parts of Iron County, electricity was finally restored late Sunday into early Monday to customers in the communities of Parowan, Paragonah and Brian Head.

According to Rocky Mountain Power officials, a portable substation and mobile generators are providing temporary relief while crews continue their repair work on a failed transformer at the Parowan Valley substation. Officials expect a permanent fix to the problem could still take several more days.

“Repairs on the transformer are ongoing, and I don’t have a definitive timetable on when they’ll be done, but it could be several days,” Rocky Mountain Power spokesman Spencer Hall told Cedar City News Tuesday morning.

As many as 2,000 connections, which includes the residences of more than 5,000 people, were affected by the outage, officials said.

Some Parowan residents saw their electricity come back on late Sunday evening, as a cycle of rolling blackouts every four hours went into effect to restore the system in phases. Brian Head’s power was back on by 5 a.m. Monday, according to reports.

Hall said there were no longer any recommended usage restrictions in place as far as Rocky Mountain Power is concerned.

“Residents and businesses should feel free to use appliances and equipment,” he said. “The mobile substation that is in place and operating can handle the usage of the impacted communities.”
