ST. GEORGE — A 57-year-old woman was taken to the hospital Thursday after falling nearly 10 feet from the Dixie Rock in St. George’s Pioneer Park.
Just after 1 p.m., police officers, firefighters and emergency medical personnel responded to the park off Red Hills Parkway on report of a fall involving a woman who was climbing the iconic rock formation otherwise known as the Dixie Sugarloaf.
Responders arrived and transported the woman to Dixie Regional Medical Center for evaluation and treatment of an injury to her wrist, St. George Fire Battalion Chief Robert Hooper said.
“She suffered an injury to her wrist that did not appear to be serious, but just to be safe, she’s on her way to the hospital to be checked out right now,” Hooper told St. George News at the scene.
At the time of the incident, Hooper said the woman was climbing down a “steep incline” as she made her way back to the base of the bluff using stairs carved into the sandstone when she lost her footing and fell 8-10 feet down toward the base of the hill.
Hooper said there is an increase in the number of visitors climbing the local landmark during the holidays. He recommended that climbers wear slip-resistant footwear and “know their limits” before embarking on a climb to the top of the bluff, taking extra care near the edge, which can have loose rock or gravel.
This report is based on statements from emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
