SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah State Legislature voted in a special session Monday to replace Proposition 2, the medical cannabis ballot initiative approved by voters last month.
The Republican-dominated Utah House of Representatives approved the substitute bill by a vote of 60-13. The Utah State Senate voted 22-4 to pass it, according to a Fox13Now report.
The bill now goes to Governor Gary Hebert, who has indicated that he will sign it.
“This agreement is a landmark day for our state and that we’re helping people,” said House Speaker Greg Hughes, R-Draper.
Proposition 2 was approved by 53 percent of voters in a contentious campaign that saw political and cultural forces working against it.
Seeing that it was going to pass, Hughes convened legislative leadership, opponents like the Utah Medical Association and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Proposition 2’s sponsors, the Utah Patients Coalition and Libertas Institute, to negotiate a compromise bill.

Even if I may disagree with the certainty of that conclusion what ultimately matters is many people perceive the situation in a similar way. I think this could usher in a few moderates in years to come as voters aren’t quick to forget such slights.

Not on the fei, I voted for it. I ultimately think they made an mistake in changing most of the things they have. That said, I would have loved to see the legislature deliberate in the open about the private property issue.

Out of curiosity were you equally ticked off when they overrode the will of the people on Prop 8 in California, that marriage was between a man and a woman?
See below, that was ruled unconstitutional by federal courts which not an apples to apples comparison.
Why vote in Utah? Maybe all the millineals and generation Z crowd are wiser and smarter then us concerned GenX babyboomer citizens for ignoring the Democratic process. Saves you time, dont have to debate B&F over the issue, and in the end let’s face it, we live in a proto-state theocracy anyway and WE THE PEOPLE dont matter vs. Big $$$$$. Shame on the politicians in SLC for overriding the majority of Utahns who voted for this. Give it to the Democrats that stood up and voted against.
I find the emerging details disappointing. Sounds like they reduced dispenseries from 40 to 7. And in tandem with that eliminated home growing for those not within a certain distance of said dispenseries. They basically eliminated thousands of Utahns from “easy” access to a potential medication.
PS…i can be disappointed in that and still think the private property issue is worthy pf legislative debate.
So what specifically did they change? When will we find out what changed?
Decreased dispenseries by 300+% (40 to 7).
No longer legal to grow if a certain distance from dispensery.
Reduction in diseases/conditions that qualify
Sounds like they eliminated clause dealing with rentals, ie owners can likely make properties non-consumptive

Maybe the cannabis for utah will be watered down like the 3.2 beer. Maybe people will have to keep driving to mesquite and paying out the a$$. Time to set up a grow operation in the cellar?
Clearly we do not have a government of the people, by the people and for the people. Maybe another revolution in the making? Check out Paris, etc. Politicians, pay attention to what the people want.

Yup Red2Blue310. Simply UNAMERICAN. A few men and likely, no women involved, have the power to override the people of Utah. This is the definition of a CABAL.
As far as I understand, the cannabis for medical use will be available for that purpose. The parts of Prop 2 that could have been misused to allow access to recreational use have been removed. Patients needing the parts of marijuana for health reasons will not have legal access.
If the LDS Church had actually come out and asked its members to vote against the proposition, it would not have passed. The church does not make political statements from the pulpit, and I challenge you to find any political directions from the Church on its LDS.org website.

Yea there’s no need for that. I sat in the church pew and listened our Bishop read the letter from the First Presidency aloud.

The truth shall set you free. Denying the truth does not change the essence of the matter. Defending your faith is one thing, but trying to cover up the truth is another. You cannot deny the LDS Church plays politics. The argument concerning access to recreational use is ridiculous. People can obtain Pot illegally in Utah or go to an adjacent State and obtain it legally. That doesn’t change. Honesty, would be to admit it is against your Church’s doctrine. As was same sex marriage in California, when the LDS church poured millions into the campaign to vote it down. Thou shalt not bear false witness. Try starting there.
You may remember that the will of the people passed Prop 8, only to have the government overrule it.
True, but it was done at the federal level. But your example does highlight an example of tyranny of the majority and the reason why we have bicameral legislatures for such issues.

The church doesn’t have to “tell” it’s members how to vote, it implies it through statements (all from this one article) like:

The next time you hear one of our local government officials decry Big Government over-regulation I hope you remember they’re liars and they don’t actually believe that.

Let’s at least create visibility. Rather than have an underground branch of government in Utah, would be more genuine honest and open to establish an LDS government office of religious approval. Give them veto power over legislation and approval of propositions for statewide vote. This way we dont have to waste time and money, and at least create visibility of direct Democracy in action in Utah.

The LDS Church is doing the exact right thing, behaving exactly how one would expect a church that opposes marijuana use to behave.
The State of Utah, on the other hand, is not exactly behaving like a proper state of the union. I know Utah is unique among states in that it is the only state openly corrupted (or enriched, I suppose, depending on one’s point of view) by a church. But this instance seems egregious.
It seems like Utah is setting itself up for a pretty substantial lawsuit here. I know the LDS Church has all the money in the world, but guess who else has big money all of a sudden? The marijuana industry. They not only have money, they have a rock-solid, guaranteed-profit business plan ready to roll into place in Utah as soon as legislators open the gate. They undoubtedly put a lot of money into the campaign for Proposition 2. And now, at the last minute, they are being hamstrung at the legislative level by the church.
Uh yeah, there’s gonna be a lawsuit. Be interesting to follow too.

Bill after bill after bill………and as I’ve said many times, and it’s proven to be right, If the Politicians want it, it WILL happen, if the PEOPLE want it, and the Politicians don’t , it WILL NOT happen. I told y’all what happened when medicinal marijuana was voted legal here in oklahoma then the governor made a bunch of regulations after the fact, that changed what we voted for.

My heart, daughter, and grandchildren are still there. It is good to know that y”all blame LDS, but know its deeper than that. Oklahoma is not LDS and it happened here.
The law needs to be changed at Federal level so the states cant use federal law against the voice and votes of the people.
Anymore….ice pick. I spent too many years there and both my kids were born in utah, one in the old st george hospital and the other in Richtield. so yes, as an outsider that moved there in the 90’s during the big growth to moving away and moving back to st george in 2011 for 5 more years….I do have an interest. I like to see how different communities live.
