ST. GEORGE — In a high-scoring affair, the Pine View Panthers outgunned the Logan Grizzlies, winning 68-50 and advancing in the 4A playoffs.

The matchup was a back-and-forth affair throughout, with Logan scoring first when Jonny Parkinson punched it in from one yard out for a 7-0 lead at the 8:41 mark of the first quarter.

The Panthers answered the early score just minutes later via a Dallin Brown 15-yard touchdown run, evening the score.

Logan added another touchdown just a minute later when Parkinson completed a 65-yard bomb to Tim Van Leeuwen, giving the Grizzlies a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Pine View tied the game early in the second, when Tosh Wright broke into the end zone from two yards away.

Just over two minutes later, the Panthers took their first lead of the game, again via a Wright touchdown, this time a 22-yard reception from Macloud Crowton for a 21-14 lead.

The Grizzlies came storming back just a minute later when Kevin Nye caught a 69-yard touchdown pass from Parkinson, tying the game. Logan took the lead at the 2:22 mark of the second via a Parkinson 25-yard scoring pass, his third touchdown of the game, which gave his team the 28-21 lead.

Pine View tied the game again with just over a minute to go in the first half when Brown broke off a 59-yard run for a score.

Not to be outdone, Logan marched down the field quickly, scoring the go-ahead touchdown with just eight seconds on the clock for a 35-28 halftime advantage.

The Panther offense proceeded to explode in the second half, starting with a Brown touchdown run from two yards out, tying the game at the nine-minute mark of the third quarter.

Pine View regained the lead at the 2:20 mark of the quarter, via a 22-yard Crowton touchdown pass to Daylor Reimer. The extra point failed, giving the Panthers a 41-35 lead.

Logan battled back on the next possession, reclaiming the lead when Van Leeuwen caught his third touchdown of the night, this one from 45 yards out, giving the Grizzlies a one-point advantage heading into the fourth.

Pine View took the lead back again, this time at the 9:00 mark of the final quarter when Tosh Wright scored from five yards away, putting the Panthers in front 47-42 after a failed two-point try.

The Grizzlies battled back, taking a 50-47 lead when Parkinson threw his fifth touchdown of the game, this time to Kevin Nye with just under five minutes to play.

From there on out, it was all Pine View. The defense stepped up, answering head coach Ray Hosner’s challenge at halftime.

“The defense made adjustments in the second half,” offensive coordinator Todd Shaw said. “Coach (Hosner) challenged them to get three stops. They ended up getting four stops. They got better as the game went on and never quit.”

Brown scored a touchdown with 3:17 left, giving Pine View a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. After stopping Logan, Tosh Wright added a rushing score – his third of the night – with just over two minutes left.

The Panthers scored one more time via a Brown run from eight yards out. It was his fifth touchdown of the game and it sealed the 68-50 Pine View victory.

“He (Dallin Brown) played really composed,” Shaw said. “He played really well on both sides of the ball and just let the game come to him.”

With the win, the Panthers improve to 7-3 on the season and will take on Region 11 champion Stansbury in the next round.

“They’re well coached. They’re always tough. They’ve got tough, hard-nosed kids. It’ll be a tough game,” Shaw said.

Sky View 61, Snow Canyon 21

The Region 12 champion Sky View Bobcats dominated the Snow Canyon Warriors, 61-21.

The Bobcats scored on the very first play of the game, returning the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

Sky View scored again at the 4:41 mark of the opening quarter, when Tanner Stokes ran for an 80-yard score and a 14-0 advantage.

The Warriors responded with a touchdown of their own with under a minute left in the first quarter when Jase Mendenhall completed a 49-yard touchdown pass, cutting the lead to 14-7.

In the second quarter, the Bobcats broke the game open via a Josh Aller 3-yard run and a 10-yard touchdown pass from Mason Falsev to Mailik Horman, taking a 27-7 lead.

Snow Canyon got a score back via a Landon Frei 2-yard run at the 7:16 mark of the second quarter cutting the lead to 27-14.

Sky View then proceeded to dominate the rest of the opening half. Falsev led the Bobcats on three scoring drives: a 15-yard touchdown run, a 53-yard score to Ryder Lundahl and an 18-yard dime to Lundahl for a 47-14 halftime lead.

Much like the first half, Sky View scored on the very first play to open the third quarter when a Warriors kick return ended in a scoop-and-score fumble recovery by Antony Torres, giving the Bobcats the 54-14 advantage.

Sky View added another touchdown at the 8:51 mark of the third quarter when Falsev ran in from nine yards out for a 61-14 lead.

The Warriors added one more score to the stat sheet when Miles Reynolds converted the season’s final touchdown from one yard out with 4:44 to play.

Sky View then ran out the final few minutes on the clock, securing a 61-21 victory and booking their trip to the next round.

Keying the Bobcats domination, Falsev lit up the Warrior defense, completing 7 of 10 passes for 166 yards and three touchdowns while adding two scores on the ground. Ryder Lundahl led the Sky View receiving group, catching three passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

The Warriors were led by their ground game, a staple of the team’s offense throughout the season. They racked up 199 yards rushing from seven different players, scoring two of the team’s three touchdowns of the game.

For Snow Canyon, their season ends after a 4-6 campaign and a fourth place finish in Region 9.

Despite the loss, the Warriors had a strong second half to the season, turning a 1-5 start into a playoff berth. They will now look forward to next season, hoping to build on their second half momentum in 2019.
