ST. GEORGE — If you get a call urging you to bring money to a remote location from a number that looks like it’s from St. George City, police are warning it’s a scam.

Police were alerted to the possible scam Tuesday where someone is using the St. George City’s phone number to tell people that their power will be shut off within 45 minutes if they don’t pay, said St. George Police office Tiffany Atkin. The scammers are asking people to go to remote locations around St. George to pay with cash or a debit card, she said.

Officials at the city of St. George do not call people when their bills are overdue, Atkin said. They also won’t ask people to meet anywhere besides the St. George City offices to pay bills.

“This is not the city doing this and we want everyone to know not to give anyone money unless they come down to the city offices to pay,” she said.

Wish they could make it illegal for people to spoof a # on caller ID. Why did they ever allow such a thing in the first place?

Exactly! I get 4 or five of these Spoofed # calls each week. yesterday was some one wanting to lower my credit card rate….Just needed my credit card info and all My dreams would come true!…. they want me to meet them for a payment somewhere fine! That is why I’m always armed and open carrying for these types of transactions!

Hopefully any prospective victims will pretend to agree with the scammers, then instead of going to meet them, call the PD and let them be met by the cops.
