The man was driving a Saturn sedan west on Fort Pierce Drive and drifted into the other lane, smashing into a Nissan sedan heading in the other direction, St. George Police officer Ken Childs said. The Nissan spun around in the road and ended up straddling a ditch on the St. George Municipal Golf Course.

The woman driving the Nissan received unknown injuries from the collision and was transported to the hospital via Gold Cross Ambulance.

After taking a field sobriety test, the man suspected of DUI was arrested.

“From what I saw, he looked impaired,” Childs said.

The man was placed in handcuffs and waited in the back of a police vehicle while both cars were being towed. Because of injuries he received from the crash, an ambulance returned to the scene to take him to the hospital as well.

A chemical test will be done on the man at the hospital to determine if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol while driving, Childs said.

The extent of the injuries of both drivers involved in the crash was unknown to police at the time of this report.

Fort Pierce Drive was closed for about 30 minutes as both cars were towed away from the scene. Both cars sustained significant front-end damage from the collision.

This report is based on statements from police and may not contain the full scope of findings. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
