IVINS — There is no need to find an excuse to dress up in your frightful best at the end of October, because this year you can lace up the running shoes and ditch the zombie horde at the inaugural “Boo Dash” fun run Oct. 27 in Ivins.

Sponsored by the St. George Running Center and Planet 105.1 radio, Southern Utah’s newest gathering of ghouls, goblins and witches is a family-friendly 5K run that will coincide with the annual “Fall Festival,” and a portion of proceeds from the run will benefit the Southern Utah chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah.

Planet 105.1 deejay Colleen Rue said families can dress up in their scariest outfits to travel the 3.1 mile figure-8 course and have the opportunity to collect treats the entire time. It should be loads of fun for the kids, Rue said.

In addition to the candy, the event promises to be a howlin’ good afternoon with Halloween music and Boo Dash selfie stations for everyone to immortalize getting their scare on. Organizers said it will have none of the tricks but plenty of treats for everyone.

The race isn’t scheduled to begin until 5:30 p.m., but the Fall Festival carnival will be held from 4-6 p.m. at the Rocky Vista University Medical College. The festival will feature a variety of food trucks and many free activities, including a costume contest with pictures and a giant blow up obstacle course. And being located at the medical college, there will also be some health-related fun, such as a human “Operation” game and mock surgery on jello brains. There will even be free medical screenings.

The Snow Canyon Jazz Band will also be on hand to play some haunting tunes.

Registration for the run is $35 for the first family member and $20 for each additional family member through Oct. 25. Racers may pick up their packets Oct. 26 from 2-8 p.m. at the St. George Running Center and from 4-5 p.m. on the day of the race.

The Boo Dash will not be a timed race, but the top three male and female finishers will be awarded prizes from the St. George Running Center, and all racers will receive a T-shirt and a huge Boo Dash finisher medal.

After the race, participants are invited to lurk around the festival and enjoy apple juice and donuts from Lin’s Marketplace, yummy treats from Katering Concepts and tons of other prizes and giveaways.

The afternoon will also benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters, with $2 from every race entry supporting the program that spends and average of $1250 per child each year in Southern Utah through its mentoring program.

Rue, a former member of the community board for the program, said they are pleased that some of the proceeds would go to the deserving organization.

“They do so much here in the community of mentoring youth who otherwise don’t have good mentors in their life,” she said.

The start and finish of the race will be at Rocky Vista University Medical College. Here is a map of the course:
