CEDAR CITY — The Central Iron County Water Conservancy District board of directors recently created a Water Advisory Committee to teach and gain perspective from community members on water-related issues. The first meeting will be held Thursday from 4-6 p.m. at 88 E. Fiddlers Canyon Road.

The committee consists of about 20 community members from various educational and professional backgrounds that will meet monthly to learn about the various water issues in the Cedar Valley.

During meetings, committee members and the public will be presented with various discussions dealing with water resource issues. The Water Conservancy District will then gather feedback from committee members regarding these items and learn what residents of Cedar Valley believe about water issues.

After gathering feedback, the district will incorporate members’ ideas, suggestions and recommendations into future water planning efforts. The time and effort of committee members will assist in addressing the needs and shaping the future of Cedar Valley.

“Currently, Cedar Valley receives about 21,000 acre-feet of water each year, and we use about 28,000 acre-feet. We need to reverse the trend of our aquifer,” Paul Monroe, general manager of Water Conservancy District, said in a press release. “Water is a serious issue for our community, and we cannot overemphasize the critical nature of the issues this committee will be addressing.”

Monroe will be presenting an overview of the district at the Thursday meeting. Other meetings will include presenters such as Kent L Jones, state water engineer, and Tyler Knudson, professional geologist for Utah Geological Survey.

“Informing the public about water issues is an essential part of determining the future of water in Cedar Valley,” Water Conservancy District board chairman Brent Hunter said in the release.

The board of directors hopes that creating this advisory committee will help the public be more informed and act on important water issues and water conservation.

All meetings are open to the public and are scheduled to be held on the fourth Thursday of each month at 88 E. Fiddlers Canyon Road. Please contact the Water Conservancy District at 435-865-9901 or [email protected] for more information.
