KANE COUNTY — A 37-year-old man was killed in an ATV crash on North Fork Road south of Navajo Lake, officials said.

According to a written statement emailed Wednesday afternoon by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, county dispatchers received a call at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday from individuals who had found the wrecked vehicle and a man who appeared to be dead at the site of the accident.

Officers from Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Utah Highway Patrol and Utah State Parks were dispatched to the scene.

The man, who appeared to have died sometime during the night, was identified by authorities as David Montoya of Salt Lake City.

“The initial investigation shows Mr. Montoya was driving northbound on the North Fork Road during the night when he failed to negotiate a turn and struck a large rock,” the statement said. “The ATV flipped on its side, fatally injuring Mr. Montoya.”

A dog that had apparently been riding on the ATV with Montoya was found uninjured at the scene.

Montoya’s body was later transported to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office.

The case is still under investigation, according to the sheriff’s office statement.
