ST. GEORGE — Three individuals are in custody following an assault reported earlier this month at Lake Mead National Recreation Area that left a Cedar City man critically injured.

The National Park Service reached out to the public Sept. 17 to help investigators identify the individuals depicted in three photos believed to be involved in the assault, which took place Sept. 7 at Stewarts Point in the northern section of Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Three days later, investigators were able to identify a suspect in the assault, National Park Service officials said in a statement released Friday afternoon.

Investigators learned that the suspect was already in custody at a jail in Colorado after he was arrested Wednesday on unrelated charges. Additionally, two other persons of interest were taken into custody as well.

Officials have not released the names of the individuals.

“Though no further details are available at this time, investigators thank the members of the public who sent in tips,” officials said in the statement.

The incident began shortly after 6 a.m. when the Lake Mead Interagency Communication Center received a report that an adult male had been stabbed, and the suspect fled on foot. A joint investigation ensued and a $1,000 reward was offered for information that led to the identification, arrest and conviction of those responsible.

The injured man has since been released from the hospital, the statement said, and federal charges in the case are pending. The Investigative Services Branch of the National Park Service and U.S. Park Rangers were involved in the joint investigation.

This report is based on statements from special agents or rangers and may not contain the full scope of findings. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
