ST. GEORGE — A car was damaged after its driver failed to yield in front of a pickup truck on Bluff Street Tuesday, according to police.

The Chevrolet pickup was traveling north at about 3 p.m. and had just merged into the right lane when a Cadillac sedan accelerated straight in front of it “at the last moment,” St. George Police officer Dave McDaniel said.

“The driver (of the pickup) hit the brakes, tried to avoid the collision, but based on how close she was, she wasn’t able to,” he said.

The pickup hit the back of the Cadillac, which caused the bumper to get ripped off. The driver of the Cadillac was issued a citation for failure to yield, McDaniel said.

There were no injuries besides minor bruises from the seatbelts. The Cadillac was towed away out of the roadway.

St. George Fire Department also responded to the scene. This report is based on statements from police or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Too many drivers see pickups and think “big truck=slow truck” and pull in front of them because their incorrect assumption gives them the false sense of security that “I can make it”. Hopefully this driver won’t make that same incorrect assumption again.

They also incorrectly assume that trucks can stop as fast as their car can. They can’t, and this is the result.
