ST. GEORGE — You don’t need to wear leg warmers and neon-colored pants to receive a good dance-filled workout from Jazzercise St. George.

Jazzercise, which has been around for almost 50 years, is often thought of as a “grandma’s workout,” said Haylee Caplin, Jazzercise St. George owner and instructor.

“People think it’s still your grandma’s workout,” Caplin said, “with legs warmers and things like that.”

However, that’s not what you’ll find at Jazzercise St. George. Since its formation in February, the program has intrigued the interest of people of all ages, from their early 20s to late 60s.

Jazzercise is a dance-based fitness program that has evolved over the years by adding aerobics, strength training and cardio.

To keep it interesting, instructors switch class formats each week. The most popular class format is Dance Mixx, Caplin said, which is a high-intensity dance workout using modern moves and strength training.

“I like that it incorporates the strength training because a lot of times you get your cardio, but then you get your strength training, which is good for bone health.”

Other class formats include Interval, which involves circuit-based bursts of cardio and strength training, and Fusion, high-intensity interval training that combines dance moves with muscle work.

Instructors will show both low-impact and high-impact versions of certain moves, Caplin said, making it easier for older people and people with injuries to complete the workout.

And for those looking to take it up a notch, Jazzercise also incorporates kick boxing into some of its formats.

Jazzercise St. George is currently doing a September special: newcomers or people who haven’t been to Jazzercise for six months can sign up for $10. The regular signup fee is $25.
