ST. GEORGE — The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is warning consumers not to eat Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal due to an outbreak in Salmonella infections in 31 states, including one reported so far Utah.
The Kellogg company recalled 15.3 oz. and 23 oz. packages of Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal on Thursday. The first sign of the outbreak was March 1. According to CDC, there have been 73 infected so far, including 24 hospitalizations.
The recalled 15.3 oz. Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal has a UPC code of 38000 39103. The recalled 23.0 oz. Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal has a UPC code of 38000 14810. Consumers can check for these codes at the bottom of the box.
People infected with Salmonella can show the following symptoms 12-72 hours after consumption:
- Diarrhea.
- Fever.
- Abdominal cramps.
Those who are likely to have a severe Salmonella illness are children younger than the age of 5, adults older than 65 and people with weakened immune systems.
CDC recommends consumers check their households for the cereal, and if they have it, they should throw it out or return it to the seller. If you keep cereal stored in containers and don’t remember what brand it is, CDC also recommends that you throw it out.
