Failure to yield on left turn results in two-vehicle collision

ST. GEORGE — A two-vehicle collision occurred Friday after a truck failed to yield on a left turn at Red Hills Parkway and 1000 East.

A green Toyota Tacoma heading east on Red Hills Parkway made a left turn onto 1000 East and was hit by a black Chevrolet Silverado that was westbound on Red Hills Parkway, according to St. George Police officer Ken Childs.

The light was green for both vehicles.

The passengers of the Tacoma are new to the St. George area and the person in the passenger’s seat was navigating, telling the driver to turn left. The driver turned left, not realizing there was a vehicle coming toward them.

The Silverado tried to avoid the collision, but couldn’t.

“He had two options,” Childs said. “He could either hit the truck or hit the large pole or the concrete and the dirt, so he took out the front end of the truck.”

A witness reported that the passenger of the Tacoma thanked the driver of the Silverado and called him a hero for swerving to avoid hitting her.

“He swerved to avoid hitting her or he would have killed her with that big black truck,” the witness said.

No significant injuries were reported. The driver of the Tacoma was issued a citation for failure to yield on a left turn.

This report is based on statements from police or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Ya know, when we moved here 2 years ago, it was kinda scary all the left turns into oncoming traffic that we witnessed on almost a daily basis. Now?, it’s almost funny how these dangerous left turns are just a normal everyday thing here. We just keep practicing “defensive” driving and hope we never become a victim of the famous Utah Left.
