  • 10:15-11 a.m.: Jeremiah Jones on cloud systems.
  • 11-11:45 a.m.: Bret Fisher on Docker.
  • 11:45 a.m. to noon: Question and Answer session with Jones and Fisher.

Presentation

Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CICD), microservices, containers and automation are buzzwords spreading throughout software and app development spaces; but where do these architectures make sense to apply and what are the real benefits? In this presentation, Jones will explore key differences between complicated vs. complex systems and how this applies to modern software development. Guests will learn how modern, massively-scaled software companies are using processes that mimic natural systems to grow, evolve and adapt to changing demands.

About Jeremiah Jones

Jones is an entrepreneurial systems engineer and the founder of Techuity, a seed investment firm for tech startups. His technical career includes roles such as lead technologist, principal engineer, enterprise architect and chief technology officer. He currently divides his time as senior architect for PrinterLogic and CEO for Madra Learning – businesses that have created groundbreaking software within their industries. With a Bachelor of Science in IT, a Master of Science in Technology and an MBA, he is passionate about education and advocates the important role engineering plays in improving local and global economies. Jones is also a classical music artist with over 38 million downloads of his piano recordings.

Presentation

Docker containers are a 5-year-old project that has revolutionized much of how we build, ship and run software on servers. Fisher will highlight the far-reaching effects of this pivotal technology and how it’s blazing a trail for the future of app development and deployment.

About Bret Fisher

For 25 years Fisher has built and operated distributed systems as a sysadmin and helped over 40,000 people learn development and operations topics. He is a Docker Captain, the author of the wildly popular “Docker Mastery” series on Udemy and also provides DevOps-style consulting and live workshops with a focus on immutable infrastructures, containers and orchestration. Fisher is also an occasional shell, web and JavaScript developer. He spends his free time in Virginia’s local, thriving tech scene helping lead local Code for America and Docker Meetups.
