ST. GEORGE — Following Friday’s shooting that left 10 dead at a Santa Fe High School near Houston, Texas, President Donald Trump has issued a directive to lower flags to half-staff until sunset on May 22.

Consistent with this directive, Utah Gov. Gary R. Herbert has also ordered flags of the U.S. and Utah to be flown at half-staff for the same duration at all state facilities.

This latest school shooting comes more than three months after the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which left 17 dead.

The Texas school went into lockdown around 8 a.m. CDT and soon after Dimitrios Pagourtzis, 17, was taken into custody and has been charged with capital murder.

After the February shooting in Florida, the House of Representatives on March 14 passed a bill that had been earlier introduced proposing the Stop School Violence Act of 2018. Sen. Orrin Hatch introduced a Senate version of the bill March 9. The House bill passed 407-10, including favorable votes from all of Utah’s representatives, and now requires action by the Senate.

The Senate bill appears to be gaining traction with 43 co-sponsors, 25 of them Republicans (Hatch included, Sen. Mike Lee, Utah, not included) and 17 of them Democrats, according to details published by govtrak.us.

The proposed act aims to fund security improvements and prevention programs for schools, among other things.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

ED. NOTE: UPDATED May 20 to clarify the Stop School Violence legislation process and status. An earlier version of this report indicated the bill had passed but did not indicate the legislation still requires Senate approval.

Wow. Another school shooting. The fact that these are happening on an almost monthly basis now and no one seems to care is despicable. America, it’s time to wake the hell up and pass laws that make it EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to get and keep a gun.

    Wake up, America.

    • SSTEED May 18, 2018 at 10:41 pm

Do you think a law will stop someone ready to kill people? Pipe bombs are already illegal but he used them anyway. There are bigger issues here but the narrative is always gun control. Why?

      • comments May 19, 2018 at 1:44 pm

The zionists learned early on thru their brutal communist regimes that the best way to enslave an entire nation is too turn them into a bunch of helpless disarmed sheep, where ‘gov’t knows best’ no matter how brutal they treat the citizenry. Rule by fear and terror. It’s what they do best.

      • An actual Independent May 20, 2018 at 7:43 am

Duhhhh. Maybe because it’s always some crackpot with a gun, who never should have had a gun in the first place? It’s never “that guy who threw 200 pipe bombs out the window of his 27th story Vegas hotel room”. It’s never “the drunk driver who ran down 87 people before he realized what happened”. And it’s not “the student who walked into the school, handed out cigarettes, and caused 17 classmates to drop dead that day from lung cancer.”

Disingenuous individuals keep telling us it’s not the guns. They like to talk about other things that kill people. And they like to tell us it’s the people, not the guns. But no matter what they say, it’s nutjobs with guns….so we need to stop allowing nutjobs to have guns.

Another psyop. Its becoming the new normal. The news wont tell you, but if you read some real journalism in a month you’ll see the lies for what they are. History repeating.

    • Chris May 19, 2018 at 4:44 pm

By “real journalism” you mean the work of crackpot conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones. Those Short Creek genes of yours apparently leave your brain susceptible to these kinds of scams.

      • comments May 19, 2018 at 8:10 pm

At the risk of sounding like a loon/nutter(maybe I am, hahaha), Alex Jones’ job is to discredit legitimate gov’t “conspiracies” by mixing them up with his lunatic/comedic/crackpot “conspiracy entertainment” or whatever it is. A few of them are paid to do this. They may even be paid by parts of gov’t. One of the reason there are no credible “conspiracy theorists” is because most of the well known ones are complete loonies or just entertainers out to make money. Plus, anyone in the know about gov’t secrets who went on youtube spouting off about it would simply disappear and never be heard from again. The purveyors of sandyhook denier loony theories have some very calculated arguments that are actually very fraudulent–they behave like sociopaths. They have made it a craft to mislead and trick people into believing their nuttery and outright lies. I believe their main motivation is money. But the way the gov’t handled sandyhook made it extremely easy for nutters to latch onto it and create theories. I don’t find conspiracies there (i’m not looking) but the whole thing was really bizarre. I really would not jump onto the “psyop trap” with school massacre, because many of these young teenage men are psychopaths with easy access to guns. SSTEED seems to fall into some easy traps of the conspiracy entertainment nutters.

      • SSTEED May 19, 2018 at 9:01 pm

Alex Jones is another zionist shill; but way to ad hominem to your resume. I will thank you for leaving my britches out of this, but here is a jumping off point if your ready to take the plunge. http://www.thelastamericanvagabond.com/expanded-knowledge/websites/

      • SSTEED May 20, 2018 at 1:04 am

Remember the video of a British reporter reporting on the collapse of world trade center 7 before it happened? Ive seen a post from the new york times dated two days before the shooting and another post from twitter timestamped over an hour before it happened. I hope I’m wrong but lets see what Dan Dicks, James Corbett, and Luke Rudkowski can dig up.

        • comments May 20, 2018 at 10:52 am

9/11 was planned and carried out by the same group of people tasked with “investigating” it. Nothing will ever be done about 9/11. Just know that a lot of these online “conspiracy experts” or whatever they call themselves are primarily motivated by soliciting money from their viewers/readers. A lot of them are nothing but tricksters and cons with their “psyop” nonsense. I wouldn’t even watch those youtube conspiracy clowns. It’s a total waste of time. I’d lump most of them in with David Icke (sp?) and his reptile alien theories. And those reptile aliens have made that kooky conman very rich–he’s found a way to expertly market his conspiracies, and so have many of the others that pedal their garbage on youtube. When these conspiracy conman have you believing everything is a ‘psyop’ they have you fooled. When they have you to where you’re sending them money they have you doubly fooled.

        • Chris May 20, 2018 at 12:40 pm

“Dan Dicks, James Corbett, and Luke Rudkowski ” LOL!! Yes, I was correct. You are a sucker for crackpots. None of that group would know the truth if it slapped them in the face. How can you be such a chump?

        • SSTEED May 20, 2018 at 1:52 pm

And yet all you guys can do is ad hominem. Find me a lie (that is not sarcasm) from James Corbett, and for every one you do I’ll find you 100 lies from the MSM/government.

          • comments May 20, 2018 at 5:12 pm

Corbett might be one of the “least bad” conspiracy peddlers, but at the end of the day he’s still just selling entertainment (or whatever conspiracies qualify as). I guess plenty of people send him money to keep him going. Luke Rudkowski has zero credibility and just sells the fear mongering stuff and sensationalism, and I guess plenty of people send him money to keep him going as well. It’s actually how these people make a living. They sell conspiracy entertainment. If you’re watching people that consider sandyhook and other school massacres “psyops” then you’re watching loons, nutters, conspiracy salesmen, or just deliberate misinformation peddlers (liars).

i’ve no idea who dan dicks is…

          • SSTEED May 20, 2018 at 6:53 pm

Well I see your true colors shining through. You agree that 9-11 is a zionist conspiracy, but what… its the only one. Do some research into sandy hook. Hear what they say and look at the evidence. There is just about as much conclusive evidence for that as that a plane hit the pentagon. If it was true it would be easy to prove; yet just like the world trade center, the crime scene has been destroyed.

          • comments May 20, 2018 at 10:24 pm

You know, For a day or two there they had me going on this sandyhook “sandyhoax” psyop thing. I actually spent a bit of time digging and found the most prominent purveyors of this particular “conspiracy theory” are either fraudsters or lunatics. They spent enormous amounts of time concocting elaborate sets of fabricated “evidence” to support their kookery. It’s amazing the amounts of trouble they went to. Some of them were/are motivated by money while some are actual lunatics. Like I said above it’s almost as if the gov’t wanted loonies to concoct “theories” on this one because the way the the gov’t handled the thing was bizarre, I will agree with that. The mobile autopsy lab thing they brought in was super weird, and why did they need autopsies at all with the causes of death so obvious. And the county coroner acted like a complete lunatic. The thing was super weird. But I don’t believe anyone pushing the “sandyhoax conspiracy” has any credibility–like I said, I found them to be loonies and outright fraudsters. It’s been years since I’ve looked at that so I can’t provide you any good sources, but dig around and you’ll find info on the sandyhoax lunatics. Not everything is a conspiracy, and it isn’t just gov’t who are a******s, so be careful what you latch onto.

          • comments May 20, 2018 at 10:39 pm

And I wish I could “unlatch” myself from being a “9/11 conspiracy theorist”, but the whole story has such gaping holes with no credible answers from official sources. It’s insane that they could pull that off…but they did. And really, it does no good to dive down into these “conspiracy rabbit holes”. It was a hobby of mine for a few a months, but now I just find them annoying and it bothers my peace of mind. Sometimes best not to fret about things you can’t change.

          • SSTEED May 21, 2018 at 10:59 am

Somebody said it couldn’t be done but he with a chuckle replied; that maybe it couldn’t but he would be one who wouldn’t say so till he tried. So he buckled right in with a bit of a grin on his face, if he worried he hid it; and he started to sing as he tackled the thing that couldn’t be done- and he did it.

  • PlanetU May 18, 2018 at 9:50 pm

Now, it’s just another school shooting in America. I agree PatriotLiberal. NOW IS the time to DO SOMETHING!

  • comments May 18, 2018 at 10:55 pm

With each one I care less and less. Am I becoming even more jaded? who knows. Lotta guns out there and a lotta loonies. We might all just have to accept the notion that we are all expendable. Lots of little fish in a big sea–what’s a handful of souls in a country of about 400,000,000? What are the lives of the murdered worth? There I go sounding like a nihilist. That can’t be good. We live in a decaying society. If anything, the future of it all will be interesting. That’ll be guaranteed.

  • Real Life May 18, 2018 at 11:01 pm

The father should also be charged, as it was his guns used to commit this vile act. You want guns? Lock em’ up, and be responsible with them!

  • Striker4 May 18, 2018 at 11:04 pm

Do all you want if the demand for guns is there so is the supply of guns …..good luck

  • AnotherReader May 19, 2018 at 9:46 am

50 years ago these mass school shootings didn’t happen. What has changed? It doesn’t make sense to say that this current problem is simply due to the mere fact that a gun exists or is available. That’s foolish. There is so much more going on here. Dejected, rejected, desensitized, devoid of compassion, desperate. Do we see a connection to the current rates of suicide? Inner conflicts both seeking some form of resolution? Our focus has to be on the cause and not the tool. After all, we’ve seen that cars can be pretty effective too when guns aren’t available. This problem did not happen overnight, nor, sadly, will it be fixed that way. Compassion, social connections, early intervention, resilience skills, mental health services may be a part of the solution.

    • comments May 19, 2018 at 1:08 pm

This “age of connectedness” ,with the internet and social media and all, I believe has made a lot of people more isolated and mentally unwell. They need actual human contact rather than just pseudo social contact thru machines with social media. These forms of interaction are actually dehumanized and shallow. There are factors at play besides that. I believe extreme violence in games and media is 1 factor, as well as the media’s promotion of extreme sexual degeneracy, and their overall ‘race to the bottom’ attitude/agenga. I feel like our society has a sickness, and is decaying. It might be reversible, but things need to change.

      • AnotherReader May 19, 2018 at 1:33 pm

@comments, I agree. Take away guns, arm teachers, post more school officers, add metal detectors; band-aids but not solutions. And band-aids don’t work well on large, gaping wounds. Something deeper and more profound has to change.

  • Utahguns May 19, 2018 at 4:11 pm

I look at Hollywood and the video games industry and place lots of blame on them for programming and creating a new violent species of human being.

Some of the most violent movies made:
    Natural Born Killers (1994)
    Saving Private Ryan (1998)
    The City of Violence (2006)
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
    Frontier(s) (2007)
    Tokyo Gore Police (2008)
    Scarface (1983)
    The Wild Bunch (1969)
    Battle Royale (2000)
    Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003)
    Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975)
    I Saw the Devil (2010)
Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991)
    Ichi the Killer (2001)
A Serbian Film (2010) ….. This is a Serbian produced motion picture that has been banned in over 46 countries and received a record 19 minutes of cuts in the United States in order obtain an NC-17 rating.

I didn’t want to take up space here highlighting the list of “Violent video games”.
Do a search yourself, check the list, then compare the list to your kids video game collections.
