ST. GEORGE — Convenience store chain Maverik – Adventure’s First Stop – has joined the nonprofit Partnership for a Healthier America to ensure children and families across the country have healthier options available wherever they are.

“Convenience stores are well known for delicious, but less-than-healthy product offerings, but over the past several years Maverik has been introducing freshly made salads, wraps, fresh sandwiches and more as part of our effort to support customers who are looking for something healthier,” Maverik’s Executive Director of Marketing Ernie Harker said. “Our commitment to PHA strengthens our efforts to promote an active, healthy lifestyle because adventures aren’t fun when you’re not healthy enough to enjoy them!”

In addition to providing healthier packaged and made-to-order options, Maverik is ensuring healthier options are affordable and heavily promoted year-round. Maverik is also the first PHA convenience store partner to expand healthier beverages in both the cooler case and at the fountain machine.

For a six-week period every summer of the commitment, Maverik will support PHA’s mission to encourage people to Drink Up through a cause-marketing campaign where Maverik will donate 5 cents from every private-label bottled water to PHA with a guaranteed minimum of $25,000.

“We are proud to acknowledge the innovative work that Maverik is doing to make healthier options available to families wherever they are,” Partnership for a Healthier America CEO Nancy Roman said. “Through their exemplary efforts to increase access to healthier foods in their stores, Maverik and its industry peers have truly put themselves on the front lines of the fight against childhood obesity.”

Maverik was founded in 1928 by Reuel Call in Afton, Wyoming, and has grown to over 315 stores in 10 states to become the largest independent fuel marketer in the Intermountain West. Maverik employs 3,700 adventure guides and has aggressive growth plans, including expansion into the Las Vegas, Denver and Spokane markets.

PHA’s mission is to leverage the power of the private sector to bring lasting systemic changes that improve the food supply, increase healthy choices, increase physical activity and contribute to a culture of health. In 2010, PHA was created in conjunction with – but independent from – Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! effort. PHA identifies, accelerates and celebrates voluntary business practices that improve or increase choice or lead to new norms and behavior around food and physical activity. Oh yes, so healthy! Let’s not forget to add the extremely low calorie, low fat, low carb, high in protein Cinnabon that Maverik has added to many of their new stores. Eat up folks! Make those healthy decisions!

Lets also not forget the gallons and gallon of energy drinks and fountain drinks they sell every day……on every corner of this town! Do me a favor and please build another Maverick. We need at one more at the bare minimum! Saint George does not need a decent place to eat, libraries, health care centers, we need another LDS Church and Maverick gas station! GO FALCONS!

Hey Josh, they are building a new one on Bluff at Black Ridge. 🙂

Why not just consolidate it and make a co-op Maverick Temple??…Celestial Kingdoms First Stop!???? You can have a big bad Moroni in his Jeep rolling around on the top of the steeple. You can go in and confess your caffeine addiction to your bishop/cashier as you pay for your Monster energy , sales tax, and tithing all in one transaction.

Josh, you are so correct. It seems this town is turning into Gas Stations and LDS Churches. There are so many we’ve started using them as landmarks when giving driving directions.

Just because you have one tiny section with salad and fruit, which btw is only like a square foot of the store doesn’t make you healthy. Every junk food item is supersized. You can’t even buy a regular size candy bar at these stores. Maverick is not a health advocate and never will be.

Judging by your profile pic Mr. No Filter, a few regular size Snicker’s candy bars wouldn’t be a bad idea. No? Besides, a supersized bar is easier to handle when you prefer to dunk it in your glass of Modello.

clogged filter is clueless and unjustifiably cries about everything, as evidence, I present clogged filter’s comment.

          clogged filters are pretty disgusting,

      • No Filter May 3, 2018 at 1:43 pm

That is very funny, it’s to bad that it’s a stock photo from a movie made in Chile called no filter, and the actress is rather skinny her name is Paz Bascuñán. But it’s nice to know that you are so judgmental about peoples weight. This is where you stick foot in mouth!

seems quite ironic. gas station food will be the new standard of “healthy”? hmm. Let’s set the bar as low as we can.
