Desert Hills playing in Vegas tournament

ST. GEORGE — The Desert Hills High School girls basketball team is spending the first few days of its holiday break playing in an invitational tournament in Las Vegas.

The Tarkanian Classic, hosted by Bishop Gorman High School, runs from Dec. 20-23 and features 48 girls teams. Desert Hills is in the 16-team Diamond bracket, which had seven of its opening-round games played Wednesday. Desert Hills, however, plays its first game Thursday at noon PST against Carondelet, an all-girls Catholic school in Concord, California.

The winner of the Desert Hills-Carondelet game will face tournament host Bishop Gorman in the second-round game at 6:40 p.m. Thursday. Bishop Gorman defeated Castle View High School of Castle Rock, Colorado, Wednesday afternoon by a score of 48-46. The loser of the Desert Hills-Carondelet game will face Castle View at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Desert Hills is coming off a 51-47 home loss to Cedar in Tuesday’s Region 9 opener.
