ST. GEORGE – Detectives were called out to North Dixie Drive Saturday night after a woman was struck and killed by a vehicle that left the scene, leaving bystanders to find her body and alert authorities a short time later. Police are asking for the public’s help locating the car and driver.

Shortly after 8 p.m. emergency personnel responded to North Dixie Drive on an apparent fatal hit-and-run incident involving a pedestrian, St. George Police Public Information Officer Lona Trombley said.

Upon arrival officers found a woman lying near the roadway on North Dixie Drive just south of the Biolife facility.

“It appears the woman was pushing a cart on the east side of Dixie Drive when she was hit by a vehicle,” Trombley said.

The body of the pedestrian, a woman who appeared to be in her 50s, was located by two bystanders, a witness on scene said, and she appeared to have suffered extensive injuries.

The woman was already dead when responders were alerted to the incident, the witness said.

Detectives discovered evidence that suggests the vehicle sustained front-end damage during the incident, Trombley said, however the car remained operational and was driven from the scene.

A field investigator with the Utah Medical Examiner’s Office was called to the scene, police Sgt. David Williams said, which is standard in any death investigation, adding:

“It is very early in the investigation, and we have also called out our accident reconstruction team as well as our investigation unit.”

Police closed North Dixie Drive between West Sunset Boulevard and West Stardust Drive and later a crew from the St. George City Streets Division was called in to cordon off the area to divert traffic from the scene.

“We need your help,” Trombley said.

Anyone with information that may help police identify and locate the person and the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run and anyone who was in the area at the time is asked to St. George Police  at telephone 435-627-4300.

This report is based on statements from police and other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

It’s really the culture in STG. A total disregard for Speed Limits!!!! 5, 10, 15, 20 mph over is the standard on every street. Dixie Drive is one of the worst. Drive at the Speed Limit and you will almost be run off the road. Add in the phone use and it’s a recipe for accidents.

Are you that stupid? Really? This is usually a harder time for people due to the holidays, and obviously more so for people whom Christmas actually mean more than gift giving and partying or don’t give a damn at all. What a low life.

My comment about him not being able to spell the word lose got deleted. I understand why. This is a serious matter, and families are hurting. I hope the person who did this feels enough guilt to turn themselves in.

I hope they catch the coward(s) that did this. But probably won’t happen. This has been happening too often. TOTAL DISREGARD FOR LIFE!!!! So sorry for all those who have lost this year! To be left in the side of the road like that is deplorable!

all they need to do is figure an approximate time, and then do a camera view comparison from traffic going in one direction and identify some front end damage between the two cameras. I bet person will be caught by tomorrow.

So very sad, that someone could hit and kill someone and drive away. They must be sick with grief or they are just a cold blooded killer. I pray they turn themselves in before they lose their mind. condolences to the family may they have the strength and courage too make it through this horrible ordeal…

Well I think the cops might know who did nit! The house right across the street from mine. Today at lunch the cops and detectives were there, looking at a green ford truck. They were very focused on the front of the vehicle. Of course nobody answered the door. This truck was parked on the street for 2 weeks, now its parked nose in. At this point my investigation is still pending. GO FALCONS!
