ST. GEORGE — How young children’s experiences impact brain development will be the focus of a lecture this week at Dixie State University.

Cari Buckner, chairwoman of the university’s Family Studies and Human Development Department, will speak on “Brain Development in Young Children” in this installment of the university’s weekly Dixie Forum: A Window on the World. The lecture will be given Tuesday from noon-12:50 p.m. in the Dunford Auditorium in the Browning Resource Center on campus. The lectures are free and the public is encouraged to attend.

Buckner will discuss a variety of simple everyday activities that provide critical nourishment for children’s brains and how development occurs when adults actively interact with children. Additionally, she will present research that has revealed how certain experiences and activities are more effective in aiding brain development than others.

In addition to being department chairwoman, Buckner is a professor of education and chairwoman of the university’s Women’s Resource Center committee. She has served on the National Council of Teachers of English’s Early Childhood Issues Committee, Utah State Language Arts Core Revision Committee and the editorial review board for the Utah Journal of Literacy.

Buckner speaks from extensive experience working with young children in public schools, where she provided opportunities for students to participate in active learning experiences and applied techniques to assist struggling readers and writers. She has also conducted research on how gifted students learn in classrooms, taking into account an array of ability levels.

The Dixie Forum lecture series is designed to introduce the St. George and Dixie State University communities to diverse ideas and personalities via a 50-minute presentation. On Sept. 26, the Dixie Forum feature Dixie State instructor Reuben Wadsworth presenting on Zion National Park.
