Updated Sept. 17, 4:18 p.m. The father of the child confirmed his son passed away Sunday morning at Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George.

CEDAR CITY — A 13-year-old boy is in serious condition after he was hit by a vehicle Saturday while playing night games with a group of friends in Cedar City.

The child was first transported to Cedar City Hospital where he was then airlifted to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George. At the time this report was taken, authorities had not been able to verify the extent of the boy’s injuries, Cedar City Police Sgt. Dave Bulloch said.

“We don’t know right now exactly what injuries he sustained but I know they have to be serious or he wouldn’t have been airlifted up north,” Bulloch said.

Cedar City Police and Gold Cross Ambulance were dispatched to the scene at around 8:45 p.m. The accident occurred approximately a half-mile west of the Walgreens located at 1948 W. Cross Hollow Road.

Investigators believe the group, comprised of adults and children, were playing night games when the boy ran across the road and was hit by a vehicle traveling east, authorities said.

Police are still in the preliminary stages of the investigation and were unable to confirm the exact speed the vehicle was moving. The speed limit on Cross Hollow Road is 45 miles per hour.

The rural area that the group was playing in is largely undeveloped with no street lights, and as such, officers said the driver may not have seen the child crossing the road.

“It’s pitch black out there,” Bulloch said.

No citations were issued and there were no drugs or alcohol involved.

Ed. note: The preliminary information provided by police about this incident identified the child as 12-years-old. That information has since been updated to reflect the child’s accurate age. In addition, he was air lifted to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George not Salt Lake City.
