Shirley E. Johnson

Feb. 5, 1928 – Aug. 30, 2017

Shirley E. Johnson, 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 30, at Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, following a brief illness. She was born Feb. 5, 1928, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Vern and Madelyn Herrick. She was raised and attended school in Cheyenne and Orem. Shirley married H. Blaine Johnson in 1947. They raised four children on the family farm in Salem, Idaho. In 1964 the family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where Shirley worked for the USDA Soil Conservation Service. When both Shirley and Blaine retired in 1981, they moved to St. George.

Shirley had a good eye for design, and she and her husband built several custom homes together. But her greatest talent was her outgoing, friendly nature. There were no strangers to Shirley, and she developed a large group of friends throughout her life. Her family is most grateful for the devotion they showed to Shirley over the last several years.

Shirley was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served several local missions with her husband. But her favorite calling was as Girls’ Camp Director, which she happily performed for many years into her 70s.

Shirley is survived by her children: Christy Spezzano, Scott (Ann) Johnson and Bob (Jan) Johnson; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Blaine; son, Boyd Johnson; and granddaughter, Holly Johnson.
