Letter to the Editor: Myths can’t diminish measurables when it comes to Trump presidency

Stock image, St. George News

OPINION — The left has been painting Trump as racist, xenophobic and misogynistic for over a year. Let’s examine these accusations.

Let’s look at the racism claim. Trump has appointed multiracial men and women to various business and government positions. Ben Carson is a Black neurosurgeon who played a big part in Trump’s campaign and now is in the Trump cabinet. Trump Enterprises administrative manager is a Black woman, so let’s ditch the racism. There is zero evidence.

Xenophobia is fear of foreigners. Mrs Ivanka Trump is a foreigner. Trump has invited many foreigners to the White House. His businesses are in many countries. He went to Saudi Arabia a few months ago and was greeted by the Saudi King.

He embraces foreigners.

Misogyny is hatred or fear of women. Trump has wonderful daughters and a loving wife. The left has accused Trump of liking women too much. You can’t have it both ways. Kellyanne Conway, a wife and mother, was Trump’s campaign manager and is now his top aide and confident.

So much for the innuendo. The labels are clearly an excuse by the left for lack of policy. Name calling is adolescent and desperate.

Let’s talk about measurable facts.

Trump has presided over unprecedented economic growth. Jobs are at a 20 year high. The stock market is at an all time high. The GDP grows toward record rates. Unemployment is the lowest in recent memory. Illegal immigration is down 70% since November. Regulations crippling business have been reversed. New court appointments have restored constitutional law. Islamic jihadi terrorism is down in America but up everywhere else. Businesses are staying and returning to America. Taxes and health care are being addressed. Infrastructure is going to create jobs and much needed repairs. The opioid epidemic is a priority.

So, don’t you think it is time to talk about measurable accomplishments and quit with the personal attacks? Unless shown otherwise, I choose to believe Trump is a typical 70 year old male from Queens, NY who cares about America and is accomplishing much. The myths can’t diminish the measurables when it comes to the Trump presidency.

Well written, Craig. That said we can now lean back and wait for the cry babies to leave their crib and entertain us with their infantile weeping and wailing (and gnashing of teeth, to finish the scripture).

  • Thecadean August 29, 2017 at 8:29 pm

I just hope the newspaper isn’t paying for this poorly written trash

  • Craig August 29, 2017 at 8:38 pm

    Wonderful. Nice to see truth.

  • Foxyheart August 29, 2017 at 8:40 pm

    Thank you

  • Chris August 29, 2017 at 9:13 pm

“unprecedented economic growth” “GDP grows toward record rates” ??? not even close to being true. You are grossly misinformed.

  • dodgers August 29, 2017 at 9:26 pm

Thanks Craig. Refreshing to look at objective evidence and truth. No he’s not perfect, but he has accomplished much despite the noise of unsubstantiated name calling and an impotent congress.

  • Sapphire August 29, 2017 at 9:27 pm

    That was refreshing!

  • jaltair August 29, 2017 at 9:38 pm

The extremes on the right or left are the same (in my thoughts} both only believe concepts or facts that fit their narrative politically. This extreme political divide or polarization in this country has all of us standing on a precipice . Antifa (anti-fascism) has no philosophy, they only want to destroy and more on the extreme left have the same goal. What is taking place makes absolutely no sense; our President, our American culture, and the foundation of our Republic is being attacked, and if this storm of hate continues, the whole country may fall of the cliff we are standing on.

  • Sedona August 29, 2017 at 9:38 pm

    Very well said Mr. Davis.
Let’s stick a copy of this in Ed Kociela’s Play Dough box.

  • Pheo August 29, 2017 at 10:23 pm

Ah, the old “some of my best friends are gay/black defense.” Classic.

“Trump has presided over unprecedented economic growth. Jobs are at a 20 year high. The stock market is at an all time high. The GDP grows toward record rates. Unemployment is the lowest in recent memory.”

These were all true at the end of the Obama presidency as well, but I’m guessing you still thought his presidency was a disaster. More jobs were created in Obama’s last 7 months than during Trump’s first 7 months, so I’m not sure what you are bragging about there. And wasn’t it horrible when Obama took away your guns and established Sharia law?

    • Utahguns August 30, 2017 at 9:24 am

      Boy, are you disillusioned….
Your chimp-in-chief consistently attacked the Second Amendment throughout his terms, gave sharia law momentum in this country, forced this country into a flawed health care program and was a continual thorn in the energy industry.
I give tremendous credit to the American public for recognizing that Obama’s reign was coming to an end, that the democratic party only had a weak and dishonest presidential candidate, and that Americans had nowhere else to go except in becoming great again.
I loved the response you liberals took when Trump recently took the trip to the devastated Houston area….all you could do is complain about Melania’s shoes.
See why you’re no good for this country?

      • bikeandfish August 30, 2017 at 5:12 pm

How do you think calling our nation’s first black president that racially loaded term is acceptable?

Dismayed by how common these sort of racist remarks are the on internet. Its comments like this that have helped fuel the issues in our country right now.

  • Bender August 29, 2017 at 10:50 pm

Spruce this pig up with lipstick, perfume and a summer dress all you want buddy. At the end of the day he’s still an embarrassment.

    • John August 30, 2017 at 7:26 am

Hey Bender ! Come back to reality ! Hillary Lost ! Obama is irrelevant ! The Democratic Party is dying! Bernie is a socialist ! Antifa is a terrorist hate group and if anybody is an embarrassment it is the so called Liberal self righteous know nothings of today ! They are just a bunch of carrot chasing brain dead liberal meat puppets who refuse to see the truth. Thanks for telling it like it is CRAIG.

    • Mike August 30, 2017 at 7:34 am

      Truth hurts doesn’t it!

  • dhamilton2002 August 30, 2017 at 12:03 am

Trump does not deserve any respect. He is a pathological liar who apparently cares only for adulation and praise. Other than bullying the congress into invoking the nuclear option to have Gorsuch appointed DT has not accomplished even one legislative action. All of his so-called ‘wins’ have been via executive order. He deserved to be painted as he is because of his actions. And by the way his ‘victories’ in all of the economic areas you put up as facts began long before this worthless man became president. I am sick and tired of you right-wingers giving credit to a man who is, by any measure, the worse president ever!!!

    • John August 30, 2017 at 7:32 am

Dhamilton2002, What planet are you on? You can’t prove one thing in this comment, you sound like a butt hurt Hillary supporter. Well it’s time to put down your coloring books , get off your unicorn and get with reality. Of course if you enjoy being a crybaby you will need a whole lot of kleenex because it is going to be a long 7 1/2 years for you.

      • bikeandfish August 30, 2017 at 2:22 pm

The use of the nuclear option, ie cloture, for the Gursoch approval is fact and verifiable history:

Trump’s recommendation is well documented. “If we end up with that gridlock, I would say: ’If you can, Mitch, go nuclear,’” Trump said at a White House meeting with conservative advocacy groups.

And before you invoke the problems of filibuster remember that the only reason a seat was still available is because of the gridlock the Republicans imposed on Obama’s nominee. It doesn’t matter what party we align with as the parliamentary procedures of Congress are designed to protect the minority party at any one time and protect our country from tyranny of the majority.

It would be great to see more conservatives stand up to the values they have long held and espoused about the rules of federal governance.

        • John August 30, 2017 at 4:16 pm

using snopes does not verify anything,, snopes is a divorced couple with a cat.. the democrats are obstructionists and liberals lie

          • bikeandfish August 30, 2017 at 5:48 pm

If a liar is someone who tells verifiable facts and supports it with citations than call me a liar any day. #fakenews and all of it tools are just symptoms of a impoverished platform with no foundation.

Resorting to calling snopes petty names is an admission that you have no evidence to the contrary. Which makes since as every news organization and journalist in the US knows the nuclear option was used to pass Gorsuch through the approval process. Reuters is one of the most trusted and respected organizations of reporters in the world. The vast majority of news articles in the US are based of the reports they or the AP file.

Call the current democratic minority obstructionist all you want but remember that when the party you align with is in the same position and uses the same, long respected procedural tools of Congress.

        • John August 30, 2017 at 6:47 pm

use of snopes as a legitimate source is a sign of liberal incompetence..hahahahaha..get a life bike and fish..Hillary lost..get over it..Trump IS THE PRESIDENT, I hope you got plenty of coloring books, it’s going to be a long 7 1/2 years . And about impeachment..1st they need an impeachable offense, of which there is none and second the democrats don’t have enough votes to impeach a dog catcher..even if they did removal from office is very hard to do..remember the rapist Bill Clinton? he was impeached..keep following that carrot and we will keep laughing at you..

          • bikeandfish August 31, 2017 at 7:45 am

You use the same word vomit in response to every comment. The only one focused on Hillary is you, never brought her up. She lost more than 10 months ago. Old news. And what is this fascination with a bad metaphor about carrots? I tend to think most people are interested in more than trolling but if that is you only goal at least get better at it. Most of us have been using the internet for 25+ years now so it takes more than superficial jabs.

Or, if you care about the subject at hand, then take the time to engage.

          • John August 31, 2017 at 12:18 pm

bikeand fish..I do care that’s why I am calling you a carrot chasing liberal meat puppet..you just chase the story they lead you to every week? you are to brainwashed to see it but it is quite entertaining..it’s goung to be a very long 7 1/2 years for you..How much did you donate to Bernie’s FAILED campaign? hmmm? you don’t have a clue about reality..hahaha!

          • bikeandfish August 31, 2017 at 12:48 pm

Interacting with you on the internet is like holding a drunks hair back as they puke. “Just get it out, you’ll feel better”. I think you still have some baseless insults to hurl.

But at the end of the day you are expected to support your views in public discussions. Plain and simple. And if you expect I will think otherwise because of silly, ineffective name calling then you will be disappointed. I can list off the ones that haven’t worked if you want to save time in the future.

  • vintagehippie August 30, 2017 at 12:42 am

    Craig, nice letter.

The liberal sector is dismayed that a money launderer and lair who used her position as Secretary of State to coerce payoffs (bribes) from anyone (the Russians, Chinese and other such U.S. “allies”) under the guise of “donations” to the family charity. A charity of the family, by the family and FOR the family. She was one of loudest critics of President Trump and her treatment of women. I suspect that she was projecting her husband’s behavior and her treatment of his accusers.

  • Ladyk August 30, 2017 at 2:06 am

WOOHOO Craig, so simple and so sweet.

  • high5 August 30, 2017 at 8:02 am

  • JOSH DALTON August 30, 2017 at 8:16 am

Trump reminds me of someone who sucks on their hands. GO FALCONS!

  • ladybugavenger August 30, 2017 at 8:17 am

    I love Trump!

  • jaybird August 30, 2017 at 8:39 am

What is wrong with people around here? Do you really think these rubes are the master race? Look around. They can bearly spell their own names. Polygamy, sheep to the churches, uneducated, low paid, still flying the confederate flag, and mostly white people thinking Trump is great. Hows that trickle down working for you?

    • ladybugavenger August 30, 2017 at 5:40 pm

Why you gotta bring race into this? ?
      Reasons I love Trump:

He’s tough (look at him keep going and waking up everyday with all this backlash and hate thrown at him- could you do it?)

He’s not a pushover (he wants to wipe out isis and protect America and not hand out money to other countries so they will be nice to us(oh snap! That’s extortion)

      He can’t be extorted

He wants people to be legal (a lot of name calling and obstruction for that) it’s the law of the land and people are mad because he and I and want it enforced. Build the freaking wall!

He wants to change Obamacare- it needs to be changed but let obamacare fail on a personal level and then all the obstructionist will want it changed. Obamanationcare sucks! But did you know people blame Trump for the healthcare and I said to my friend that it’s not Trump it’s obama because Trump couldn’t change anything and I got a lot of hate from her trumphater friends, so I unfriended her on Facebook. Ridiculous!

Oh snap! Not one reason is because he’s white. Lol if Hillary was President these same people would say I hate Hillary because she’s a woman…lies lies lies Hillary was awful, she would have handed our country over to one world order- it’s still going to happen but Trump is going to give all the fight he has to fight against it- go Trump!

  • Bob August 30, 2017 at 9:01 am

Wow someone learned how to cut and paste from the the Fox news website! Your so brainwashed you can’t even come up with your own opinion.

  • mmsandie August 30, 2017 at 9:03 am

Well those that think the Democratic Party is dying are nuts.., the democratic party gave us Medicare and social security which is used by many… Trump has. Only because of his father inheritance, he married a hot chick, and married her gave her a green card and. IticiEn ship in 6 months??? Someone got paid off.. He hasn,t made any major decisions. In his term so far.. He has cost taxpayers so much security money because he leaves the White House so,often ..and doesn,t accomplish anything.
Bill Clinton left office and we had a surplus, Bush got us in the war with bad information about WMD…if tax cuts take place for corporate taxes,, the rich benefit not middle class or poor, so don,t say he is a great man, look at the facts for the last months.. Everything he says he changes after he realizes he didn,t know what he meant..
    Time for a change..

    • comments August 30, 2017 at 11:31 am

“Bush got us in the war with bad information about WMD”

It wasn’t “bad information”. Bush had been wanting an iraq war from the get go. They simply fabricated the WMD story to serve their ambitions. And with the country still amped up after 9/11 and ready for a war with ANYONE no one seriously questioned the fraudulent story. The media cheered “war war war” like good little puppets. Bush II’s iraq operation directly led to the creation of ISIS. So many idiots in these comments above simply don’t know any history. Simply, right-wing idiots have memories like gold fishes. Trump is a degenerate and his policies so far have been garbage.

And really, isn’t this about Craig Davis’s 10th letter this year. Can’t we have some sort of limit. I’m not reading this one, but I recall what a poor writer he is.

    • Mike August 30, 2017 at 1:02 pm

You are in another world mmsandie! You should be a comedian! Lol!

    • John August 30, 2017 at 2:31 pm

mmsandie, the democratic party is dying …Donations for the year..plus they are 3 mil in the hole
      DNC: $5.5M
      RNC: $13.5M
      Year to Date
      DNC: $38.1M
      RNC: $75.4M
besides being obstructionists and not having a platform, they used to be a political party, now they are a mental health crisis. going to be a long 7 1/2 years for you ! hope you have plenty of tissues and coloring books!

  • NickDanger August 30, 2017 at 1:01 pm

This is what liberals don’t understand. There are millions of people out here just like Craig Davis, and myself, and plenty of my fellow Utahans who see right through the mainstream media hyperbole.

Trump’s an easy target. He’s always been an easy target, since long before he was President. But the facts speak for themselves.

Trump is forced to play out not one but TWO major agendas. First, he has to at least try to undo all the damage done to the country under the Obama administration. I mean look at us. We’re suddenly sitting in a country in which gay marriage is righteous, and being a straight white (CIS…LOL) male is viewed with contempt. We have segments of our population who don’t recognize that we are living under constant threat from terrorists, and other criminals from beyond our border. “Let them in!!” is the cry of the low-information liberal masses.

Trump is the right man in the right place at the right time. Someone has to stand up to the effete, over-educated morons manning the Fourth Estate right now, or our country is going to become another Great Britain, Germany, or Sweden – where hyper-liberal, media-propagated views on everything from immigration to law enforcement have resulted in a general takeover of all those countries by uncooperative and unrepentant foreign invaders with no stake in the nation’s past or future.

It’s refreshing to read (most of) these comments and realize that, at least here in St. George, Utah, many citizens recognize what must be done to maintain a strong and prosperous USA.

    • bikeandfish August 30, 2017 at 3:21 pm

Do you believe in the personal liberty enshrined in the Constitution, Danger? If so, then its our job to protect it for everyone not just those our personal beliefs, religions or preferences appeal to. We should respect the dignity and agency of individuals to decide who to build a life and marriage should be. Individual or religious beliefs about what is “righteous” shouldn’t be weaponized to limit a persons inalienable right of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The courts and executive should protect anyone including minorities from anybody that wants to infringe on those.

White, heterosexual men are not directly under attack. The systems and behaviors of some, clearly not even the majority, designed to discriminate against minorities are being slowly dismantled and critiqued. There is a major difference.

Do you know the process required to be admitted into the US for amnesty or refugee status?

Can you show me empirical evidence that we are under “constant” threat from foreign terrorists? Foreign terrorists definitely try to injure our country but statistics don’t bear out the idea that they are the biggest terrorist threat, even if incidents like 9/11 take more lives and incur more damage.

You seem to have many fears of others yet constantly insult journalist. Who are you getting information from that feeds these fears? Do you go to respectable outlets for primary sources?

      • John August 30, 2017 at 6:50 pm

oooooh !! liberal talking points,,you sound sooooo sophisticated..NOT!!
..reciting that liberal misinformation bullcrap..you drank way too much kool-aid

        • bikeandfish August 31, 2017 at 11:33 am

Actually the first comment is a conservative and Libertarian view which the RNC seems to have abandoned in its decades long effort to capture the Evangelical vote. Personal liberty is explicitly a core tenet of our country.

The middle idea can be written of as liberal but only if you dismiss the conservative values listed above that build the foundations of equality.

And the terrorism statistics are factual as supported by interagency documents and reports.

No koolaid drunk here. Too sweet.

  • Bender August 30, 2017 at 1:12 pm

“Trump is a poor man’s idea of a rich man, a dumb man’s idea of a smart man, and a weak man’s idea of a strong man.” Carry on fellow posters, the sane among us understand why you love Trump.

    • bikeandfish August 30, 2017 at 7:02 pm

Ugh, I wholeheartedly support holding Trump accountable for his choices and behavior but that doesn’t mean dragging him with such inflammatory rhetoric or discounting the myriad of reasons voters thought he was the best choice. Insulting them makes no sense ethically or logically.

      • Bender August 31, 2017 at 3:10 pm

Yet there is some truth in the quote – not mine by the way. No great choices in the 2016 presidential election but Trump was, by a long ways, the worst one. An unrepentant demagogue being cheered on here by those moved by fear and anger.

        • bikeandfish August 31, 2017 at 3:35 pm

I think my concern is obvious though. When we start turning our personal opinions and judgments about trump into insults about those who voted for him, as is inherent with language like “poor man’s”, “dumb man’s” and “weak man’s”, than we have crossed a completely different line. I definitely think his racial and religious rhetoric was dangerous and inconsistent with out national values. Heck, even the republican running mates considered his language and ideas inconsistent with their own parties platform. But citizens vote for candidates for many reasons and they don’t own their candidates many flaws. Trump does (and those who ran his campaign and directly work with him in the West Wing), not them.

  • mctrialsguy August 30, 2017 at 2:37 pm

I know people in Europe especially germany, they laugh at Americans who voted for trump and say we should get rid if electoral vote… Trumo promised so many things as many politicians do before they are elected but didn,t know how to carry them out.. I wonder if Trump as a choice of Building the wall, closing down the govt, if helping those in Texas flood…. And he needs more money for his security.. Which would he choose?…. I gave an idea but it’s not nice to comment.

    • John August 30, 2017 at 6:54 pm

mmsandie..just like we are laughing at you ! you voted for hillary and she didn’t win even though she cheated..hahahahaha. • commonsense August 31, 2017 at 2:10 pm

The author points out that there are things we can measure. Show me data that reflects badly on the Trump presidency. You can’t. So, the innuendo, myths, assumptions and character assassinations really don’t have much value.

Contrast this was the Obama years where every indicator showed a failed government.

    • bikeandfish August 31, 2017 at 4:00 pm

That is fundamentally untrue and patently false:

Obama experienced higher job growth during his term than Trump has yet:

Obama experienced many GDP growth rates better than Trump so far when compared quarter to quarter:

The Stock market performance depends on which portfolio you use. The DOW has done better under Trump but the S&P did better under Obama. In fact Obama’s 22.6% growth (taking office until July) is the highest percentage of any President since Eisenhowser:

Figures for retails jobs are so far much worse under Trump than Obama when comparing to 2016. These jobs are critical for our economy in many ways:

Unemployment rates are on almost exactly the same trend as they were when Obama was in office:

Lowest, record, best are all rather useless terms if they don’t include percent change from preceeding numbers. Granted, many statisticians argue a president’s accountability for the economy doesn’t come into effect until his first budget is approved but we don’t have the chance to compare those numbers yet. I would definitely be happy to have a DOW portfolio right now and if Trump continues to improve our economy he should get that credit. But that standard should apply to Obama as well and the measurements of his tenure are pretty successful.
