ST. GEORGE – A 25-year-old Arizona man is dead from an accident following cliff jumping at Lake Powell Monday.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the area of Anchovy Point in the Arizona portion of Lake Powell Monday afternoon on report of the incident, according to a news release from the National Park Service and Coconino County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona.
Responders were told by witnesses that Erick Kallestewa, of Hotevilla, Arizona, had jumped from a cliff approximately 30 feet above the water and subsequently had difficulty swimming and remaining above water when he resurfaced due to the wind and wave conditions.
Kallestrewa was accompanied by two others from Hotevilla, Arizona, one of whom attempted to rescue Kallestrewa, according to others who witnessed the incident from a private boat nearby.
Kallstrewa’s body was found Tuesday morning by the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area dive team and remotely operated vehicle specialists.
The incident is currently under investigation by the National Park Service, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Anchovy Point is a popular spot on the reservoir located between the Glen Canyon Dam and the Wahweap Marina.
