WASHINGTON CITY — A mobile home fire that claimed the life of a 60-year-old man, who ran inside the burning home to rescue the home’s occupants, has taken the life of its second victim – a 3-year-old girl who succumbed to the injuries she sustained during the fast moving inferno.
“We received word this afternoon from the medical people in Las Vegas that the 3-year-old child had passed away,” Washington City Police Public Information Officer Ed Kantor said Wednesday evening.
The 3-year-old and her 27-year-old mother were transported by air to University Medical Center in Las Vegas in critical condition after the two had been trapped inside their home, located at 441 E. Angie Lane, when it became engulfed in flames.
A neighbor, identified by his family as Richard Kirkland, ran inside the burning home in an attempt to save the woman and child, but was quickly overpowered by the rapidly growing blaze.
Kirkland and the 3-year-old girl were not breathing by the time firefighters were able to pull them from the fire, officials said Monday. Kirkland was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The 27-year-old woman was found unconscious inside the home and was transported the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Kantor said Wednesday evening that the woman remains in critical condition.
Officials Wednesday had yet to determine the cause or origin of the fire, Kantor said.
“That might be quite some time before the fire department determines that,” he said, “especially where there was extensive damage to the structure, it might be quite some time before they have any idea.”
As this report is published, authorities have not released the name of the woman and child.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
